acetoning emblems, is there an easier way?

hey guys, well i decided to acetone my emblems, and i found the easiest way to go around the outer edges is w/ a razor blade and just scrape it off(easily as to not scratch it) but the other parts, should the black melt off really easy w/ the acetone? im using fingernail polish remover, but the ingredients say it has water in it, maybe i should get some pure acetone? gimme some tips, thanks, and heres a pic of my progress:

EDIT: forgot to mention im using q-tips and dipping them in the polish remover, then gettin at the emblem like that.

i've never even known what acetoning them meant....

does it just pull the black "paint" off of there, so it's all chrome?

would it work for mine?

SoundPer4mance 07-18-2005 09:22 AM

brent yours is super easy, we can do it next time i see you. i use paint stripper, which will work on yours, but not on the ranger one since you will get too close to the paint on the truck

TippnOver 07-18-2005 09:55 AM

that wont hurt the emblems finish?

i like the fact mines chrome

SoundPer4mance 07-18-2005 09:57 AM

it will be all chrome, like my truck

quicksilver2001 07-18-2005 12:22 PM

is it hard to take the emblems off and dip them in the acetone? or should i just stay with it on the truck?

TippnOver 07-18-2005 12:31 PM

stay with them on the truck...

u CAN Take them off, but it'll be more of a mess/hassle than its worth unless u feel u cant do the job 110% unless u do

heres how ya do it if ya want

take a hair dryer to the emblem for a good 5-10 minutes....then use whatever device u can find to peel the emblem back...theres gonna be a lot of 3m type tape holding it on, and will turn very tacky, so be cautious...u can then start working the emblem off, but be careful, as these emblems can bend....

also, to reattach it, u must have more clean 3m tape

quicksilver2001 07-18-2005 12:49 PM

ok, ill try keeping them on the truck, and if its too hard ill take em off, thanks for the help

TippnOver 07-18-2005 01:00 PM

np man, let us know the finished product!

quicksilver2001 07-18-2005 08:21 PM

well finished them, wat a PAIN IN THE ARSE, man, that was a pain to do, i ended up taking them off and letting them soak for about 10 minutes, then hit em with a stiff bristle brush, got most of the stuff off. on the one i started on on the truck everything came off easy, but the other side, by time i got finished the stuff was almost baked on so the passenger side one didnt come as clean as the drivers side but still looks good, i will get pics tomorrow

EdGe_wannabe 07-18-2005 09:31 PM

I'm gonna do mine now this week...

Brenton

quicksilver2001 07-18-2005 09:38 PM

yours should be 1,000 times easier than mine, good luck, i love the way they look

TippnOver 07-18-2005 10:31 PM

You could have used a strong fishing line to get behind the emblems to get them off your truck...

karrbass4life 07-19-2005 09:06 AM

...I want to see what this will look like, I've seen it done on an F-250 and it perfect.

quicksilver2001 07-19-2005 09:19 AM

ok, heres the drivers side, i still need to wipe it down get the haze off but it looks better in person

birdie2000 07-19-2005 09:20 AM

the way i did it was to go to ford and get 2 new emblems and i acetoned them with cotton balls and qtips. i then removed the old emblems and put the new ones on...less than an hour for all.

01xltranger4x4 07-19-2005 09:30 PM

Sweet......any easy way to pull those emblems off without breaking them, or scratching the paint on the truck?

quicksilver2001 07-19-2005 10:41 PM

heat em up and pry em off, i used a screw driver, just be careful w/ the paint :)

birdie2000 07-20-2005 05:38 AM

fishing string...just go all of the way around the emblem...then pull it off with your fingers... that way you dont have to worry about scrathing the paint.then use goo gone to clean the rest of the sticker off.

SONICEDGE03 07-28-2005 09:53 PM

I just used alot of acetone on a rag and wiped it over the emblem a couple of times and washed it with car wash soap and water. Haven't had any issues and it got both of them done in less than 10 minutes.

03dangerranger 09-28-2005 06:23 PM

SO does acetone work the best or what? Cause I'm using paint thinner and I'm having a hell of a time.

Redneckstone 09-28-2005 06:39 PM

yes nial polish remover works.(acetone) I hope for god sakes there off your truck right now with the paint thinner

03dangerranger 10-26-2005 03:14 PM

yeah acetone definately works better. Took about 5 minutes , comes right off.

black-n-blue 10-28-2005 08:21 AM

i used a credit card to slip under the emblem and help take it off, the goo was a pain, but its an easy mod to do
