If anyone is still interested....I was able to "Frankenstein" a tailgate assist device for my 2010 Ford Ranger XL. I used most of the parts from a DZ43200 intended for an F-150 BUT I had to have a welder join a new driver's side tailgate latch "striker" with the piece holding the nub that the gas cylinder attaches to. It also required the gas cylinder from a Pep Boys Stabilus EZDown device because this cylinder is much shorter than the DZ one. Total cost including welding services $85. I can provide more info if requested.

2004 Ranger
I used an assist for a NAVARA NP300
used it on left side
eliminated left tailgate cable
reversed the two tailgate latch bolts (one that held cable interferes with cylinder)
replace cable bolt on box with one provided
used hole in bottom side of tailgate for other cylinder bolt
all seems to work bought on EBAY

I have a 2006 Mazda B2300. Here's what I did. I used the NAVARA NP300 recommended by jolly above. I purchased on ebay for $14
I had the lower bolt welded to the tailgate. This cost me $20.
I drilled a hole with a 'J' drill right below the screw hole for the upper taillight screw.
I used one of the bolts that holds the tailgate cable as a tap because they are self tapping and the same threads as the damper bolts. I had clearance issues with the taillight assembly caused by the bolt being so close to the taillight screw. I also used the square nut included in the package to further assist in stabilizing the upper bolt.
Complete.
The way I installed it let me retain the tailgate cable. You have to hold the tailgate until it is halfway down before you can release it. $34 total cost.
