Air Intake Temp Question
Well I bought my scan gauge and I am loving it, but I think it showed me an issue with my truck. My IA gauge stays about 95-105 and it did not get much cooler when i was driving 60 mph for about 15 minutes. It was 68 degrees outside, and from what the book for the scan gauge said it should be close to outside temps while at highway speeds. My truck came with a K&N cold air intake, but no shield on it. I also have the stock air box which I might put back in if the K&N is the problem. I don't know what the normal intake temps should be but I do not think mine is right. Could the filter be dirty? ( i bought a recharge kit and recharged it about 4 months ago) Could MAF be shot? I have no idea. I think this is also hurting my gas mileage some. Any help appreciated.

Modified Stock airbox!
I did this just because the cold air shield worked poorly - now works great!
https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...45&postcount=8 Mine is an '07 and I cut off the input pipe and blocked the hole, then cut a new hole to center the K&N filter in the stock box. Hope this helps! |
Heres one rich or wydopnthrtl (his user name on here) He made this http://home.comcast.net/~rbickford32...index-cai.html
Im sure he made a thread somewhere on it if you search for it.. |
It would be sweet if you put the Stock one on and did a little test we could finally solve the myth of After Market CAI verse the stock one...

i see intake temps on my scangauge from 101-200 every day. sittin in traffic it gets really high. highway speeds it drops to close to outside temp. i have the stock airbox and removed the intake snorkel so your fine with what you have

Removing the snorkel defeats the CAI of the OEM airbox. |

The fresh air is still going into the box even without the snorkel. I'm going to install the snorkel to see if the temps change at all. I really doubt it though.

I just made a much bigger snorkel...

Feel much like you wasted money on your "cold air intake?"
|
Is the silencer the big giant thing in the middle of the pipes for the air intake? I took it off to look at it the other day and one end of it has a big opening and then the tube gets smaller in the middle of it. Then it has some holes toward the end of the pipe. Then I realized there was a lot of oil in it and it was dripping on me. So I decided to put it back on.
I just feel like if I took that out and just put a pipe in its place I would get some extra power. |

You just have to get the right intake if your going to get one. Volant and S&B have a sealed box that keeps the heat away. |
I am making my own heat shield here hopefully in the next few weeks. Either sheet metal or plastic.

Oh oh... I've got a good web page fer ya! I did a data log of vehicle speed vs intake temps with the semi open K&N fipk kit.
Check out the bottom 2/3rds of THIS PAGE |

The funny thing is, it is still debated that a CAI is even helpful. They may smooth the airflow down but there are articles worth reading about hot air being used. IIRC it helps run more efficiently, whereas the selling point of a CAI is coolness factor and cooler denser air. Maybe try and intercooler, lol. Who knows whats right or wrong. It is topics like these that cause me to run what I bought from Ford and their R&D department.

I was cruising with a buddy who had a K&N kit, and I had stock intake.
We were both running scangauges and CB radios, we radioed back and forth the whole time, his intake temps were always anywhere from 10-30 degrees hotter than mine. Never lower |

What a surprise, Ford does know how to design an intake!!!
If someone is interested in high rpm power the K&N does perform. Rich |

No comparison for stock intake?
But for the sake of your questioning it. The stock ranger held temps on that stretch of road within 5-10 above ambient. However if sitting dead still it'll climb and climb. This is what my cold air box mimicks the stock setup. Just allows for much more flow. Rich |

I would not argue that. But it's also restrictive at 4500+ rpms.
If someone is interested in high rpm power the K&N does perform. Rich Here is a couple of your previous posts on the K&N intake: "Only if your over 5000rpms regularly. Otherwise just go paper and remove the snorkle." "I'm a big fan of aftermarket intake kits. (have one on my Ranger) But only because of high rpm power increases. If your not interested in 5000+ rpms.. don't waste your money." "You won't see a MPG increase as compaired to a properly working OEM setup. You will *likely* increase the amount of grit entering the intake. You very well might have the warrenty denied. And your pretty much waisting money for a daily driver." |
Well I took the K&N CAI out and put the stock airbox back in, and the temps were alot cooler, but i lost about 2-3mpg according to the scan gauge. I traveled the same 1 hour of highway and instead of getting 21-23mpg, i got 18-20ish with the stock air box. I also filled up and checked the mileage that way as well and it checks out, I was getting about 3mpg less with the stock intake, so as of today i did a filter recharge on the K&N and that is back on there. I don't care about the intake temp as much as I figured out that it is not effecting my mileage at all. Plus I have been driving it like that for over a year like this anyways, and it is fine. I also have a bigger filter than the other intakes i saw on here, so i am going to have to fab something up. I will try and get a pic of it later.

Good to know. I will be buying another intake soon.
