Aux Fuel Tank 2008 Ranger

Hi all,

I am looking for an aux fuel tank or options to install a higher capacity fuel cell for my 2008 Ranger FX4 Supercab.

Any ideas will be fantastic.

Thanks,

Mark

Here's your options:

1. Fuel cell where your spare mounts. Mod the "bucket" that holds the spare, and fill though the bed floor.

2. Inside bed mounted tank. Like the trucks on job sites do for diesel.

You can run those in addition to your stock tank? I'm sure there's more, and i havn't yet heard of an aftermarket larger tank to full the stock location.

Thanks for the information. What size fuel cell would fit in the spare tire area? Could I put a camper shell over the bed mounted tank?

Thanks,

Mark

Yes you can and the limiting factor for the size of the fuel cell will be the space you have available. You will need to take the dimensions and then look into what fuel cell matches your needs.

^^Which is why I suggest an in bed fuel tank. Looks sorta like a toolbox with a nozel. It's an idea.

Your factory fuel system has an OBDII Evap Leak Check Monitor that pulls a vacuum on the tank and reads a pressure tranducer over time to judge whether the tank is leaking. Chances are that any major mod to the fuel system will result in a Check Engine Light and OBDII fault code(s).

what if you just ran a hose from the bottom of the fuel cell, to the filler neck of the factory tank, that way it will be gravity fed, or if the tank is vacuum'ized then it would suck the fuel through.
Would that work?

Probably not. The Evap monitor is calibrated to the fuel volume of the factory tank and to the clearance volume above it. Adding tank volume will slow the rate at which the vacuum increases which could fail the monitor.

Besides problems with the monitor, a gravity feed from a higher tank to the factory system would allow liquid fuel to enter the factory canister and pour out of its breather.

Why do you need the extra 'legs'?
I tend to lean towards portable plastic tanks so I don't lug around extra weight [in the summer, that is].
If you put a tank where your spare tire is, then where are you going to carry your spare? You mentioned carrying a camper so that may create more problems than it solves. Portables can be stashed anywhere and left behind when not needed.

Barry,

I need the extra legs, because the mileage I am getting sucks. I came from 4 cylinder mpg from an old beater Toyota 4wd 22re 5 speed. I do alot of long distance driving when I go to rifle matches outside of Florida.

You could start modding the truck....to improve mileage as well. If pulling over for 10 minutes is a problem, i dont know whats wrong with ya. no offense of course.

get one of the aux tanks that goes in the bed with a filling pump and when you get low just fill it up that way you dont have to worry about changing the factory system or a cheaper alt. would be gas cans like mentioned above

Yep, look at my own list of mods.. Im getting everythign I can out of this engine, bolt on wise.. the next few things would be a underpulley kit (all pullies) and a tuner after that.. not sure whenabouts I plan on doign that.. i coudl go ahead and purchase it now.. but Im saving up for some new tires here right now.

If you get everythign you can engine wise.. you can get an easy 3-4 more miles per gallon.. may not seem like much, but when we have a 20~ gallon tank, that is an extra 60-70 miles per tank.. quite a bit!

Plus, you get the extra horsepower/torque.. which is always a fun bonus when you need to use it! =)
