another tire question... need help fast!!!!!

last night i was on the phone with my local tire shop and ordered some BFG A/T's.(they go on friday, woohooo)

i run 245/75/16R now on stock rims. i ordered 285/75/16R. i know they will clear when i do a t-bar crank and an add-a-leaf, but my father told me something that i didnt think about or hear anyone else talk about.......

on a stock, (5-spoke alloy rim), will the tire wear more on the middle of the tire since it is a wide tire and i am unsure of the width of the rim? or is there nothing to worrie about other than a little rubbing?

more specs about my truck can be found in my signature.....

i'm running BFG Long Trails, 265/70/16's, and mine seem to be wearing a little more in the middle.

I think the general recommendation is to keep the rim width within 4" of the tire width, but more variation should be ok. Looks like recommended rim width for that size is 7.5-9" according to tirerack. Your door sticker should tell you what size the stock wheel is. If it's 15x7 it should be fine, but may result in slightly worse treadwear. If it's 15x8 you're within the accepted range.

Oh and btw in case you didn't know the first number is the tire width in millimeters. To convert to inches you can divide that by 25.4 (10 millimeters in a centimeter, 2.54 centimeters in an inch).

In this case 285/25.4 gives us a width of 11.22", so with a 7" rim the tire would only be 4.22" wider than the rim.

Also, if a tire is wearing more in the middle than at the edges that can be a sign of over-inflation. Check with the place you get the tires on possibly running a lower pressure to achieve more even wear (but don't go too low on the pressure...that can be unsafe and also decrease MPGs).
