anybody have this problem?

every time i change my oil, i have hell getting the damn filter off. last time my bf had to hammer a screwdriver into the end of it to let air flow in and pop it free.

jtslmn720 06-06-2007 04:39 PM

never had a problem with it... i always take the oil pan cap off first and drain the oil then take the filter off so i dunno if that matters

Hanzo Steel 06-06-2007 04:44 PM

There really shouldn't be any suction, when you change your filter. Put a little oil on your finger and get enough on the rubber seal on the new filter to cover the whole thing, that makes it easier to take off the next time you change it.

Redneckstone 06-06-2007 04:53 PM

oil filter wretch and no problems

FORDGURL04 06-06-2007 06:47 PM

i always take the pan plug out and putthe oil on the new filter. i dont know i thought about the new k&n filter but dont feel like shellin out 15bucks for a filter

LowMaz 06-06-2007 07:00 PM

use the ford motorcraft filters and oil, i really like their stuff and it stands up good when i feel like giving my truck a workout

Mark98xlt 06-06-2007 07:30 PM

I always hated changing the oil on my old 3.0 it was such a pain in the ass to remove the old oil filter.

JoshK 06-06-2007 07:45 PM

Channel Locks. If that dont work then a screw driver and hammer work wonders.

gatorblue92 06-06-2007 07:47 PM

sometimes... it seems to only happen if i over tighten the old one

x2 They had it in such a stupid location and a stupid angle. I love my 4.0 ahhh so easy

05RangerXLT 06-06-2007 07:58 PM

Sounds like you are tightening it too tight when your putting it on after changing the oil. Most books say hand tighten or a LITTLE more. I always hand tighten mine, then take an oil filter wrench to it and turn it 1/4 turn. When removing, I reach up there with the oil filter wrench and easily loosen it. Then I take a 2 liter bottle with the top half cut off and unscrew the filter the rest of the way with the bottle around it, so all the oil and filter drop into the bottle.

when i put my new oil filters on i only put them on as tight as i can with my hand. them taking them off is hard especially my old 3.0 what a pain in the ass. but my 03 is drip drop done

my thoughts exactly... cool coke bottle trick.. but the you dont have to crank down on a oil filter for it to stay on, the compression from the engine is gonna suck it on there and its not gonna come off... oil filter wrench should do the trick

04blackedge 06-06-2007 08:36 PM

Yeah the 3.0s is a pain in the ass to get off, i have to put the wrench in from up top then get underneath to loosen it, the previous owner wedged a funnel under the filter to drain all the oil into when you take the filter off, but that prevents me from getting the wrench on it from the bottom. dang that was a long sentence lol.

nbro3232 06-07-2007 10:35 AM

Ive never found it that hard to change the filter on my 3.0L. I just lay underneath, reach up with one hand, and unscrew. Takes all of 5min to replace.

greygooseranger 06-07-2007 10:46 AM

The taurus has a 3.0 (vulcan) and I never had a problem, I think you are tightening it too much...

RazorsEDGE 06-07-2007 11:42 AM

Ahhh just put a bodylift on the truck. Its easy as heck on mine. I just reach through the fenderwell and unscrew it. I've never changed the oil on anything easier than my truck after the body lift. Complete oil change in 10 minutes.

RockysFord 06-07-2007 11:53 AM

Body lifts also help 100% when doing a tune up, to get to the plugs....lift the flaps up and your in...

My filter normally isnt too bad to get off.....you just reminded me that my oil needs changed asap....

Rooks 06-07-2007 01:14 PM

Yeah I was going to say mine is pretty easy. I always just hand tighten mine as much as possible and then loosen it by 1/2 a turn. Never had a problem.

haha i have a HUGE pair of channel locks just for that. stupid huge fl-1a filter lol..

OTRtech 06-07-2007 06:08 PM

Us old timers (can't believe I just said that) used to read the little instructions printed on the side of oil filters that said :

Tighten filter by hand until the gasket makes contact , then turn 3/4 of a turn more.

Done this for about 30 years and never had a problem.

FORDGURL04 06-07-2007 06:30 PM

well I stoped changeing mine when i got the ranger bc i had problems getting in there to work but i do on our tractors and our John Deere is the worlds worst i had never had a problem changeing oil until then every time i have to shove a screw driver threw it and i lube and barely put them on so I :scared1: feel your frustration

M50B06 06-07-2007 08:16 PM

i use k&n filter(discount at work, get it for same as any other filter) and i only put it on hand tight, comes right off when i change it no problem
and i dont believe in the little directions on the side of the filter either-my motorcycle the filters say to hand tighten, then another 2 full turns, you can never get them off, only go hand tight
