The second one (the Waag) looks to let you keep the tow hooks. I wouldn't want to loose tow hooks because of an accessory bar..

not being an offroading guy and such, i would rather have the WAAG bar

Talk to Rand about it. He was going on about loosing his hooks when installing his bar. I thought he had a bar that looked pretty close to that Waag though. That pict looks to be of an LII (w/ the stainless hooks). Maybe the hooks are mounted different on the '02 and earlier ORP than on the LII?!? Me = confused as usual!

 

I wouldn't mount either -- kills your approach angle/front clearance. Take a look at the James Duff site and they have a new bar for our trucks that mounts through the valance opening or something and doesn't extend under the truck.

I've actually never got hung up on it (yet!). I've yet to encounter anything that a little bit of the go peddle couldn't fix in 4Lo! ;-) Then again, I don't push the truck quite as hard as you do John.

That James Duff bar looks pretty weak. I'd be interested to see exactly how it mounts. Mine mounts to the frame under the bumper and valance. It wraps around the valance and the bar's frame makes a large J type shape. The upper/front part of the bar is not directly supported in any way. Overall I'm not all that impressed at how mine mounts. I've seen others that attach as mine do, plus have a strap that goes between the bumper and grill trim. Although that doesn't really do it for me either. I don't think it is possible to make a solid mount, w/o restricting clearance AND w/o disturbing the tow hooks and/or valance. I think you're on the right track by just ripping the valance clear off!

 

This strikes me as a better deal if you really want to go all out. But it's only designed for the '93-'97 Ranger. And you have to loose the stock bumper. Not sure how that would fly w/ the DMV/DOT folks..

 

That last one looks cool and they even have a winch bumper that looks badass. That's similar to what I'm planning to make to complete my Centralia bumper mod.

You can push over your bar in most cases -- but you're going to damage it if you try that on rocks in particular -- but if you don't care, well alright then! I've just never seen a compelling argument for wrapping something around underneath the truck to in order to mount lights -- and the protection most of those bars provide is pretty weak anyway.

If the Duff bar uses the factory bumper mount area's to mount, it'll be plenty strong anyway. Most of their stuff is NOT wimpy. Small tubing is not necessarily WEAK tubing.

Yeah, my bar is 99.9% for looks. I'm sure a few of you have heard my story: I went to Texas for a wedding a few years back, saw these bars everywhere, and just decided I had to have one! Silly narcism in the end. But what the hell, you only live once! ... I blame the Texans. ;-)

Besides, as I said, I don't miss the clearance much and am not overly concerned w/ how it holds up in an impact. I figure worst case it doesn't hurt anything (for my needs). Different srokes for different folks in the end..

Were I to get more into off-roading, which I doubt I will w/ a late model truck, I could easily remove it. I'm sure I could get a few bux for it locally.

And my concern isn't for the strength of the bar, but for the strength of the mount. As I said, I think the only way to do it right is to go right through the valance to the frame. But I'm no expert. Just my $0.02..

 

Hmm... Now I am planning to pick up a cheap one on Ebay for about $35 but may still take you up on this. Once I get the bumper fitted to the truck, perhaps we can make another with your bender if it does mandrel bends.

 

We have some stuff here at the plant, and I have friends at Mechanical Piping Inc. (MPI) who have EVERYTHING.

 

Excellent... I have plenty of ideas, but lack the tools to make them reality...

 

Buy that cheap bender ANYWAY, make a full size mockup out of weak, easily bent tubing, and we can use it to get the "good stuff" bent.

Go with the WAAG bar, it looks the best. Mine doesn't hurt the approach angle as bad as a pushbar would.
