Automatic transmission/power steering fluid

My power steering fluid seems to be a little low and the pump is making a bit of noise when the steering wheel is completely locked and I'm turning hard one way. No biggie, I think most fords have the power steering noise, but I figured I'd top it off with fluid nonetheless. Went to Wallyworld and found some prestone with stop squeal for two bucks. Good thing I looked at the manual, because it says to use mercon automatic transmission fluid? I also read that the auto transmission won't take this atf fluid, but uses something called merton v instead?
Am I understanding this right??? I really don't want to put the wrong fluid in it!

OOPs did not know that. Makes me wonder what that whole shelf of power steering fluid at Walmart is used for:shrug: I guess I'll just have to buy two bottles of different atf fluid, and just hope I remember to use the right stuff when it comes time to change the transmission fluid on my auto.

just go by your owners manual. most cars i have seen and most transport trucks i work on use atf in the steering. i do not know what the trans takes though.
