I only have experience with my pre-owned '01 XLT Off-Road that I purchased several months ago. I can tell you there are quite a few TSB's against the '01. Since purchasing, I've had the following work done, most of it charged against the extended warranty that I bought at the time of purchase.

- Yoke thing had to be lubed to rectify the issue of a huge clunk in the drive-shaft during initial acceleration and de-allelleration.
- Timing chain rattle, which resulted in the replacing of the chain, gear and tensioner.
- Condensation in the fog lights, requiring either replacing or a venting-piece being added (depending on how bad they were attracting moisture).

my truck....i love it and its been a great truck for the 22k miles that i have put on it....

lifted97ranger 10-05-2006 06:47 PM

you can buy my '97.....great milage for the year(86k miles) and it gets 16.5 mpg with the 35's......already lifted and modified for you.....

no but really.....any used vehicle with low miles that has been taken care of is a good vehicle....

01-03 and I am not biassed. The SOHC is a much smoother operating motor than the OHV 4.0s

SuperSonicFX4 10-05-2006 07:43 PM

03 Level II I think was the last year they came out with the transfer shift lever. 97 and older if you plan on wheeling it hard, they have a front axle that flexs.

Best of luck

mx98ranger 10-05-2006 07:43 PM

well i like the look of the 98-00, but the sohc motor is just more powerful. so id go with anything over 01 with 4.0 in it

RockysFord 10-05-2006 08:00 PM

Just to get this strait what years had the OHV and what years had the SOHC

And whats the power / HP difference

gatorblue92 10-05-2006 08:07 PM

personally i like the 02 and 03 the best... they seem to have less problems than the 01

MonsterGuy 10-05-2006 08:47 PM

up to 00 have the OHV and 01 up have the sohc, the power diff i think 168hp to 207hp in the soch i think might be wrong on the OHV idk.

Biz 10-06-2006 02:31 PM

for me i like no monthly payments..i would get 95+ with low milage.prolly get one for 3k and put 2k in it..and it will be pimped..

BRENSRANGER 10-06-2006 02:41 PM

good old 93...lol,i want a 02 or newer

Mr. Special 10-06-2006 06:41 PM

depends on what body style you want

(ex: 98-00, 01-03, 04-05, 06-07, etc etc) get the most recent year of that body style... OR just find one with under 40K miles

just make sure it's got the 4.0 :biggthump
