I was out tire shopping, (as said in my other post) and at merchants tire i was talking to the guy about the offroad tires they had there and he directed me at a set of dunlop radial mud rovers, i actually saw them and they looked pretty impressive but i was wondering if anyone could help me out w/ experience with them or a friend that has them?
BTW: i am getting 31 1050 r15

ok personally donlup mud rovers side wall is WAY to thin to be a GREAT tire but this is IMO not others. also I have seen these not self clean that well. PERSONALLY I like the Mud King XT and the Buck shot mudder WAY better then the donlup. also the Mud King pictured here:

are made by BFG and use there M/T compound. also have BFG's rim gaurd.

now the buckshots are better then the Mud king because they last longer on milage but that also means there not as soft so in mud they wont be as good to a point.


now a little more $ would be Cooper STT comes in 2 versions. first is the one I had Discoverer Radial STT

which is a very nice and soft compond and also gets GREAT life am talking i got 45000 out of them

then there is the new redesigned Regular STT

which basically a different siped STT

 

Actually, the new STT has stronger sidewalls and all. It's a VERY tough tire.

I toyed with the idea of the Radial Rovers. One recurring theme I ran into was that the sidewall was thin for an offroad tire. But if you're not into hard wheeling in sharp rocks or wood, and mainly need mud traction, they are a GREAT tire from what I've read.

It's hard to beat the price of the Radial Mud Rover though: I could have gotten a 35x12.5x15 for $119 apiece with $53 shipping for all 4 from the tire rack. But I decided to go with Cooper S/T's (cross between and A/T and a mud tire) instead. Right now I just have 2 on the rear, and BFG A/T's on the front in the 35" size.

Edit: "Mud King" is not a BFG trademark and there are SEVERAL tires by different companies that are called "Mud King". Be careful because you can get some cheap junk under that name. I'm not sure BFG is even making them any more.

 

acully now i think about it i didnt have the radials i had the orginal Cooper STT before they redesigned it!

 

well, i have the mud rovers, and im known for getting flat tires...but i havent gotten a flat with the mud rovers yet *knock on wood*

i had them on my old truck and have them on my new truck.

they look great and IMO they perform wonderfully in mud

after a few thousand miles they do get a little loud on the street, but whats a mud tire without the hum?

so ya, its a good tire, after all, iv gotten them twice

 

I have the Mud Rover's in a 33 and love them, they give great traction. I just can't wait to see what kind of tread life i get out of them.

 

Bailey, that's a GREAT picture, lol! I love the big blob of mud haning between the wheel and the "mud flap". Gives new meaning to the term!

 

John you said you got good life out of your old 31" coopers S/T. What kind of good life do you mean by this. As I am too still in the market for a good A/T tire of the sort but don't really merit a mud tire. I do need the big lugs for the snow in erie but would like to see some good life from them.

I got 30,000 out of them (and could have gotten 10K more probably) even with a BAD camber problem and not keeping up with the front alignment in general. I did rotate them though. I eventually cranked the bars so much I had wicked negative camber and that wears tires out pretty quickly.

Most folks seem get 50k to 80K out of S/T's (the LT versions, not sure about the P-metric versions). But that also depends on how you drive. In general, Coopers are good wearing tires.

 

Thats about all I needed to hear. Just gotta get around to going to the shop and ordering what I want.

 

coopers mudders are a good wearing tire because they use a harder tread compound than others. my dad had a set of 31x10.50x15s on his effer for a few yrs. they worked well but were awfully harsh, noisy and werent that great in the snow. the hard compound is what i believe made those complaints happen.

Dunlops are a nice tire but wear to quick. i know a kid who has a 97 ranger with a 30x9.50x15 and wore out a set in 25,000K. good traction other wise.

sport king MTs are alright for the price but again they wear to quick. friend of mine had them on his 84 blazer with a 3" BL and a 31x10.50x15.

no experience with the buckshut mudders...

another choice is General Grabber mudders. they are a decent wearing tire with a good mix of traction and life span.

wanna throw the ProComp MTs into the mix. they are a softer compound so they will wear a little faster but a bud of mine has 31x10.50x15s on his 96 effer and has 25K on em. they look like they can last another 10K or 15K with religious rotation. plus they have a siped center tread for good traction in the snow/ice/rain for a MTs. mine have about 7K on em and look new besides the camber/toe issues i had. plus they run a buy 3 get one free deal and if u shop around u can get them fairly cheap online with decent shipping.

Petersons 4 wheel n off-road had a review on the cooper SSt and said it was good in everything but the rocks. just to hard a compound to get to stick. thats all i can remember.

 

lol. thanx John. That was actually when I lost my other mud flap, the mud was just too heavy and it got torn off...hehe

took me 5 hours just to get the mud out from under the truck, but it was freakin fun...but that stuff smelled sooo bad.

the tires did great in it tho, i just slid right through the mud
