Buying my first Ranger. Look like a good deal?

Found this Gem on craigslist. I own a 2008 F150, but I'm looking for a project truck/mud toy. Think this is a good deal?

I've replaced headgaskets on motorcycles, but never a truck/car.

What other problems should I be worried about if the truck needs new headgaskets? ( high temps, warped heads, etc.? )

Thank you! :D

Also, this is my first post. New to the forum. Hopefully if all goes well, I'll own a Ranger soon!

I doesn't say what engine is in there now, but I would plan on replacing the heads, you probably won't need to but expect the worst.

In 1993 a Ranger could have 4 cylinder 2.3l, or a V6, 3.0l or 4.0l
4.0l heads were prone to cracking.

Even if heads are good plan on spending $100-$150 at machine shop to have them cleaned, pressure tested and surfaced(made flat)

Engine could have other damage in general or from being overheated, smell the oil, if it can be started and run a minute or two that would be a good sign, engine doesn't need coolant for cold start and to run for a minute.

Head gasket is just wrench work, same as motorcycle just more bolts, and more parts to remove.

Price is area specific, so hard to gauge, $500 doesn't seem like too much.
Pass on the V8 unless you want alot of wrench work

its the 4.0. He says he used it as his daily until the headgasket went. I'm bringing a buddy with me who is very, very familiar with Rangers. Hopefully this will pan out to be a good pickup.

Thanks for the reply and the suggestions.

4.0l heads would crack between the valve seats when overheated, so if coolant got low or hose broke and driver "just tried to make it home", they would get a cracked head.
It is a weak point in the casing, but doesn't just crack, it needs to be overheated.

So head gasket could be fine and cracked head is the problem, not that it matters symptoms are the same.
And either is caused by overheating, head metal expands faster because it is hotter and crushes cylinder ring on gasket, or head cranks.

Look up head gasket set cost and new head bolts(have to use new bolts) and then cost of 1 head, just in case.

1st i would look at the frame and suspension parts for major rust

nothing kills a deal faster than major corrosion in critical areas
