Code Reader and Parts Brand question

Hi,

I would like to purchase a code reader for my 99 Ranger. I would like something under $100, but I need to be able to determine some things for myself as I live in a country with somewhat inept mechanics at times :) Any suggestions?

Second, on parts... I am needing to get a couple of sensors. Does a person have to spend the money on OEM parts, or will A1 Cardone or BWD parts work?

Thanks so much!

No need to spend the cash on the OE stuff if it's available in the aftermarket most of the time! Some people swear by things like OEM spark plugs, belts, etc.

I have the actron cp9125 scanner. Its around 50 bucks and can read and delete codes. It will only give you the number so you will have to look at the included booklet or search online, which to me is fine.

A1 Cardone is pretty much reconditioned OEM parts. They pretty much take the cores and refurbish them. BWD is a great company and has lifetime warrantys on about 99% of their products. Hell some of the parts on your Ranger are probably BWD with a Ford stamp.

There are many times we get "aftermarket" sensors and a few other things with the Ford logo on them right on the box!

Pepboys sells an actron code reader for under 100 bucks, it shows the number of the code, and tells you what it is.

You could also get an ultraguage and then you would have gauges to display things like rpms, average mpg, engine temp among other things.

Price is right too, $60 plus shipping. Plus there is a rebate. Something to consider, there are a number of members that had them and like them. I enjoy mine.

Thanks for the tip. Where do you get them?
