What can I do to improve the gas mileage on my 2001 Ranger - right now it really is the pits. Tryed replacing the plugs and wires, air and fuel cleaners now what?:

 

Clean the MAF.. I'm guessing by air and fuel cleaners you mean the filters? Might try running SeaFoam through it.. look on youtube how to do it. Also.. lay off the skinny pedal.

 

Yes filters is correct - Sea Foam used it - never - never rev my baby higher than I should - anything else to try?

 

91 octane fuels more or less do not contain ethanol , which results in horrendous fuel mileage

i only burn 91 octane fuel in my engine

 

Check your tire pressure, What kind of mileage are you getting?

 

Been using the same stuff since I got it - may try higher octane

 

new tires - pressure good - poor mileage was happening before the new tires.

his ranger is a 2001 model
the engine computer is not programmed to read burnt ethanol in the exhaust gases

the computer thinks the engine is running a little lean but will not activate any codes

 

What mileage are you getting?

 

How bad is it? I know my mileage during the winter months drops down a bit

also running a higher octane fuel wont do anything. the truck was born using regular and should continue to use regular (87). Unless re-flashed for running a different octane fuel, it shouldn't be changed.

 

I gained a constant 1-2 MPG when using 91 octange
Edit: Oops my bad I read way too fast. I have a 91 tune, so yes he is right using higher octane won't do anything for you

 

Running 91 that doesn't have ethanol WILL increase mpg without retuning. But not enough to offset the added cost of 91. So its moot.

I'll ask again, what's your mpg currently? Hand calculated?

 

I remember the days of caring about gas mileage, and I don't miss them

 

Around 12 mpg - sucks - I was getting about 18 - 20 when I first got it

 

That's a big drop, I changed the fuel filter in my truck and went from 18 to 12, now I'm back up to 18

 

I will replace the fuel filter again and check my MAV - thank you to all the suggestions now my weekend is complete.

 

Wow, it's strange that a code isn't being thrown for such poor gas mileage. The only other thing that popped into my head was checking the Idle Air Control Valve or the O2 sensor; but you don't seem to have any problems with the Idle and you are not throwing any codes....Good Luck Man, we are here to help, keep us updated.

 

with his ranger being a 2001 model . i would go ahead and replace all of the 02 sensors

those sensors do deteriorate over time from the exhaust heat

 

I'll check the other stuff first than proceed to the sensors next if needed - thanx for the advise.

 

Can you clean an iac motor

 

what brand of spark plugs did you install

i would have replaced them with the motorcraft iridium 1`s

this is what i would do in sequence
1/ clean throttle body
2/ clean idle air controller ( port )
3/ replace spark plugs with motorcraft iridium 1`s
4 / replace all of the o2 sensors
5 / replace the ignition coil ( they do deteriorate over time from cycling and engine heat )
6 / fill up your fuel tank with 94 octane fuel and 2 cans of seafoam and run that through your engine
