coolant on top of overflow tank

Does anyone else ever find coolant all over the top of the tank after a long drive?

My 3.0 does this often. I'll clean it all up, then after the next long drive it'll happen again. I don't think the tank is overflowing, as the coolant level is normal when it is stopped. I tried revving the engine while watching the tank, and I did not see any bubbles come up. Not showing any other signs of a blown headgasket.

All I can think of is that the coolant may be sloshing around on bumps and the cap just doesn't seal well enough. It's not supposed to be airtight though, is it?

If its the same as the 4.0 and the overflow hose plugs in on the top in a bad spot it may be the overflow hose could have a crack or is just old enough the when heated it leaks out a little.

The cap should be tight and not allow fluid out of the tank unless the temperature can lift the spring. If in doubt replace the cap, it's cheap.

Yup run down to NAPA and get a new cap. While you're there pick up some combustion gas test strips to test the coolant.
