current Ranger to remain until 2011

As record fuel prices leave automakers' carefully-laid truck plans looking as if they've been bombarded by a squadron of B-52s, an unlikely survivor might poke its head through the wreckage at Ford: the Ranger. Originally slated to be given a gold watch, a pat on the back, and then shown the door in 2009, the Detroit News reports that the current Ranger might live on until 2011, when its new global replacement will be ready. Attractive fuel economy and good sales numbers -- the Ranger is the #2 compact truck behind the Taco, even though opening the door to the Ford is like stepping into a time machine to the 1990s -- might be the current Ranger's saviors. Salvation is not completely assured, however. Some investment would be required to keep Ranger alive no matter what, as the current truck doesn't have side airbags, which are required after 2009 (this was probably one of the reasons it was slated to die off then in the first place). Is spending money on the Ranger to extend its life just two years in Ford's best interests? Bean-counters will decide. In case you haven't noticed, they've been doing a lot of deciding, lately. |

Its not like that its I just dont see myself buying another one. I like change I dont want to drive the same type of vehicle the rest of my life

Perhaps Ford will think outside their a$$ and drop a 3.5L (from the Edge/MKZ/Taurus etc.) and perhaps the Ecoboost 4 cyl./6 cyl. Might as well redo the whole thing then just typical restyled bumbers, wheels, you know?

I cant see ford spending a bunch of money redoing the interior just to keep the truck alive for 2 more years.

Well, I love these little trucks, and I'm glad to hear Ford finally woke up and started considering keeping the Ranger around for a little longer.

No logic in keeping the Ranger because of gas prices and then shipping in a "world" Ranger.. It's gonna cost more to ship it than it is to make it here.. Just make the NEW Ranger HERE!

I want to see what the replacement is for the Ranger. I was more excited reading that thread then this one. It would be cool to keep the Ranger alive but too me I rather drive my 99 around then in the future buy a new F - 100 |
I'm honestly not surprised. Ford was almost forced into not making a new f150. The ranger is whats keeping the f150 afloat right now. I also figured with the way prices are it would hurt more to dump the ranger for a couple of years then to bring out it's replacement.

Ford is retarded. There's PLENTY of logic in keeping the Ranger around, either as a Ranger, or rebadged as an F100. - The Ranger is one of the few remaining compact trucks available - The Ranger (4cyl) is currently the most fuel efficient truck in its class - The Ranger name has been around for DECADES... has a strong following, and has a strong history Now... as the trend was going towards bigger and better, the Ranger's future may have, once upon a time, looked poor. Now that gas prices have leapt up, it makes more sense than ever to keep the Ranger. The NEW trend is going to be towards fuel efficiency, and smaller sizes. That said, Ford already has the PERFECT truck that achieves both good mileage AND still has its small size. People need trucks, period. This is a perfect opportunity for Ford to try and capture lost sales of other, less fuel efficient truck brands. For those in the market who still require or want a truck for its towing/hauling capabilities, the Ranger, with its great gas mileage, would make a great alternative. |

no we have room, at least the ext. cabs do... just dunno what they would do with the fold out ext. cab style... I know the escapes have them in the seats...now that might work too

Yay more upgrades to add to my Ranger. Actually I will probably buy another Ranger in a couple years. I'm glad to hear it.
