prepping for a long distance road trip
so i decided that instead of flying, i think i will be driving to oregon (approx 990+miles )from home to see my girl. si figured that im gonna have to prep the ranger.
first and obvious item need to be done is to put my camper back on, get some, oil/coolant and tools and a fuel can in case if i run out of fuel.
i know i will need a flashlight, snivel gear (for i will be living out of my truck for a bit), extra drive belt, extra chow, water and lots of red bulls.
sounds like a fairly complete list. what else you guys think i'll need to go to oregon?

how long you planing on taking to get up there? my dad used to do it straight thought from Bakersfield CA to grants pass OR in like 8-9 hours but im sure he was on something take your time dont fall asleep behind the wheel
Remmber:
1:once you cross the oregon boarder you CAN NOT pump your own gas pull up to the pump and a guy will pump it for you(unless its changed in 10 years)
2:mapquest your trip out before hand and take maps im not trying to stereotype oregonians but from what ive seen they dont like californians i lived there for 2 years and got in alot of fight cause i was from cali (but i swear that whole town was inbreed)
so be carefull in asking for directions

Yea....oregon/norcal is nothing like nevada or someplace like that.
so your coming to oregon....go ahead an replace those wiper blades. Change your oil for good measure. You really have nothing to worry about really...just don't run yourself out of gas. 1/4 tank and your drivin' by a town....fill up. no biggie. For me, 1,000 miles is about 3.5 weeks of driving for me. Whats your maintinence on your truck been like? Is everything pretty much up to date?

I make that mistake every time... haha... they hate me... I get a lot of funny looks when I jump out and start the gas, but their attendants should be faster!!

Yea that kinda tripped me out too, some weird hick fool wanted my CC and I wasn't used to the "I can't pump my own gas" law.

I just did a 780km trip to trailer home an Explorer, I was very over prepared but it's more than worth the safety/comfort.
(I won't include the recovery gear for loading the Explorer)
Jack, jack stand(s), tire iron/wrench, and mostly: Check Your Spare's Pressure,
Extra vital fluids, oil (about 1 qrt or 2), coolant (water will work in August), a gallon of windsheild fluid, trans fluid (1 or 2 qrts),
Duct tape, zip ties, twine/rope/yarn, a couple feet of spare electric wire and maybe a spare light or two (194, 9007, 3157 . . .),
A flashlight, batteries, cell phone, blanket/bed sheets, plastic tarp and bungee cords.
Then of coarse drinking water, energy bars/granola bars, canned food and whatever else you feel nessesary.
Alot of these you won't need for highway driving but we have alot weird weather and landscape here so I would rather be over-preped.
Good luck on the trip man, just use common sence on anything you question, later on.

Agreed... full tank of gas (depending on the year 1 qt. oil) and roll... especially on that drive you won't be more than a few miles from civilization the whole way...

Why doesn't anyone ever mention toilet paper!!! Murphy's law states when you need to go, there won't be any paper in your stall (if you are lucky enough to find a stall), and nobody will spare a square (Seinfeld).
I just did a 2000k journey, only thing I did was charge my cordless impact (in case I needed it), and checked my oil. I was also carrying extra bearings, cause I was concerned one of mine would decide to take its own vacation - which it did, but when I finally got home.
Ohh, and always carry some cash on you, never know what you will need it and won't be able to use the visa.

HAHA! That's right....Oregon is a non-self filling state. I regularly get yelled at from attendents/owners...I make effin' sure I fill MY OWN tank on my chevy. Gas has been leaking down the side and eating away at my paint. screw that...i'm doin' it myself. Got 86'd at a station. I still go there. lol. Been told its like a $4600 fine for filling your own tank. lol.
/end hack.

I always take #1 my pistol, flashlight, toilet paper, drinks, beef jerky, some cash, emergency credit card, cds or satellite radio, and whatever other luxuries I feel I need. I've driven from Albuquerque to Baltimore once and New Jersey to here twice. Just dont drive tired, and make sure you got some tunes going, you'll be fine. Once you cross a state line watch your speed, cops love out-of-towners. Oil change wouldnt be a bad idea, but check all your fluids and your tires. Dont forget to check your spare too. Have a nice drive!

I don't get what is with you guys and guns. I've driven lots of long distance drives and never ever had a situation I'd need a gun.
