Does exhaust tip shape affect sound?
Hey guys, I got a question for ya:
Can the shape or volume(space inside) of your exhaust tip affect the sound? I heard from a friend of mine's step-dad that it does, that: Round = mellow and quiet Oval = Louder and snappy Square = Deep and rumbling Anyone know if this is true? Thanks guys, hope this doesn't sound stupid! |
No, not even close. The only difference you will see (and it has to be more than just the tip) is larger will equal a lower tone with a bit less volume. Smaller will equal a bit more pitch and louder.
The shape of the tip means nothing at all when it comes to sound. |
of course a chrome tip will get u oooooooh's and aaaaaaah's where as a rusty tip will get you a ewww ;)

I prefer to rock flat black though. http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL70/.../144669361.jpg |
I've heard the size can effect... like my ranger has 3" tips some guy said If I went to a 4" it would be deeper? I thought to myself... No way it could, unless the whole piping was bigger right?
|
Yes, if the whole piping was different it would be deeper. And it really doesn't even have to be all of it, just post cat.
And on another note, going to large with exhaust diameter will cost you in tq and power. Exhaust requires velocity to make power, if it's too big, it's allowed to cool too much prior to leaving the pipe and will cause a restriction. There is a limit and myself, I wouldn't go over a 2.5 inch on the biggest thing you can get in a ranger. On a turbo or SC car, bigger is better to an extent but once again, you can still go to big. Damn typing with these pain pills is a PITA. |
man you seen the exhausts on the stock F-250s geez its huge like 5" piping...

You are dealing with a rediculously high compression large displacement turbo motor though, of course it's got a huge exhaust. But it's not that big honestly, it's about 3.5-4 depending on where in the piping you measure.
|
well, i know from experience that on my 3.5 inch diameter ss exhaust tips, 18 inches long, made the flowmaster exhaust system echo. Now I have the Bassani system out the side and it isn't as loud or deep with the small tips it has now.

Slap your friends step Dad........he's an idiot!! LOL

anyway ok thanks guys, he might have been trying to be a smart-ass infront of me. I always thought that if you had long/wide enough tips it would make it deeper, ohh well, thanks again guys! |
I don't think the shape will be much of a difference but I could tell you that in a car if its bent down to bounce off the ground to straight back is totally different
