PSA - Winter driving reminder
It's that time of the year again, so I'm gonna say it; if reading this helps just one person then I did my job. When parking your vehicle in the winter, and when the temp is below or anticipated to be below freezing, remember to NOT use your parking brake. If you do use it, you probably won't like the inevitable consequences, and you will absolutely remember this thread. That is all.

I google parking brake below freezing to do some more reading... Found this thread from 2005. Look who the first responder is! Small world...

Something to do with me getting an earful every now and then from highly surprised people that their e-brake froze, they got a FWD car, and they try to drive away and they're dragging a tire, can't get it free, and need a tow to a nice warm shop. I'm just a bit surprised that people don't think about this before it happens.
*Uggg, that's a French Tickler Enthusiast thread you've quoted, lol, but I do remember talking about this in there some time ago. I stay away from the place, but in light of that website being bought by Internet Brands, and the former owner now (or at last check) getting banned, maybe it's better.

Granted Missouri doesn't get extremely cold, but even for below zero temps I've never had a problem
A friend of mine (who isn't that smart) took a pot of boiling water and poured it onto their frozen windshield and cracked it

Windshield glass is made like a sandwich. An outside layer of glass, a polymer film in the center, and an inside layer of glass.
Cold air blasting against the outside causes that layer to shrink faster than the inside. The glass tries to "bend" so to speak and the uneven tension makes it crack.
If you look very closely at a cracked windshield you'll see the crack only goes half way through.

It's not the hot air hitting instantly. It's the glass getting very warm inside and then the blast of cold air as you start driving down the road.
