Welcome to the forum
E8 = 1988
F6 = 1996
Just FYI
Those are both M5OD-R1 transmissions, but there are three things you need to find out.
1. these transmissions have integrated bell housings, can't be removed/swapped
2.3l Lima engine has unique transmission bolt pattern, so trans from 2.9l, 3.0l or 4.0l won't bolt to a 2.3l engine
2. it needs to be from a 2WD, 4WD trans won't work for you
3. Your 1988 uses a speedometer cable, which all rangers used thru 1994, in 1995 dash was changed to full electronic, so speedometer cable was removed.
A 1996 transmission may or may not have the speedometer hole in the tail shaft and the worm gear inside, my best guess would be no.
1994 or earlier would for sure have it.
So you want a M5OD-R1 transmission from a 1988(first year) to 1994 Ranger 2WD with 2.3l engine
E8 = 1988
F6 = 1996
