Driving from MI to AK
Hi everyone,
I recently accepted a job in Skagway, AK. I'm considering driving from Michigan to Alaska in my 1999 Ford Ranger, because I have a dog that I absolutely cannot fly. The truck has 100,000 miles on it, and has been well cared for. I have never had any major issues with it. The last time I had it in with a mechanic to fix the brakes the only suggestions were to have muffler work done sometime in the near future. Do you think an older vehicle could make the 3,000 mile drive there and back no problem? What would be your concerns. And renting a car is not an option, as I'm only 23 and the rate is much too high for being under 25.
Thanks

Its winter time so plan accordingly, i.e. winter tires and chains
To enter Canada, even if you are just passing thru, you will need documents showing dog has all shots required, by Canada, so check with Vet they will know.
You don't "need" a passport but do need valid drivers license and proof of US citizenship, like birth certificate.
You will also need the above when you get to Alaskan border and have to go thru US border crossing
Have a detailed inventory of EVERYTHING in the truck, you will be inspected.
Many things allowed in the US are not allowed in Canada, even passing thru
tasers, pepper spray, brass knucks, lol.
fire arms are restricted as well, so check first, hunting is popular but the kind of gun matters.
If in doubt "check it out", because worse case is you are refused entry, best case is they confiscate the item(s).
Well I guess worst case would be you are arrested, and then banned for 5 years, lol
Gasoline is heavily taxed in Canada so drive in the US as far as possible, even with 25% exchange gas costs more.
Make sure vehicle insurance covers you in Canada, and Alaska
You can skip some of this by taking Washington State car ferry to Skagway, never priced it out, they do allow dogs but they must stay on car deck and you will only be allowed to "visit" them a few times a day, for walks, food and water
And less worries on break downs since most miles will be boat travel, and less gasoline cost
I would price it out just to weigh the options
