Engine rebuild Question

I have a 1996 Ranger XLT 2.3L 5-speed with 285,000 miles on it. I'm thinking of getting a decent core engine and rebuilding it (crank bearings, cam bearings, rod bearings, piston rings, etc, etc). My question is if I get an engine from a wrecking yard that is compatible do I also need the PCM from that same truck and swap it with the one that is currently in my truck??

Thanks, any help/info is much appreciated - Kevin

No, on changing PCM, but you have a 2.3l SOHC Lima engine, used in Rangers from 1983 to 2001, in mid 2001 Rangers started getting the 2.3l DOHC Mazda L engine, Duratec, you can't use that engine in your 1996 without changing transmission, computer and wiring.

So any 2.3l Lima is fine, but 1995 to 1997 would be best choice since they have dual spark plug head, same Crank sensor as '96 and cam position sensor.
1994 and earlier used Hall effect Crank sensor, not compatible with your '96 PCM.
So you would have to change front engine cover

Thanks you RonD,
I do have the 2.3L SOHC I'll begin looking for a '95-'97 engine. It'll be an interesting undertaking - never rebuilt a SOHC 4 cyl, built plenty of small & big block Chevys over the years - this will be my first 4 'banger'. :-)

Hey, Ron, do you need a dedicated tool to remove the cam on the 2.3?

No

Just sockets to remove bearing caps, keep them in order, they should go back on in the same position, just like main bearing and rod bearing caps
Most caps are stamped or marked but don't count on it, lol.
