Engine swap

Hey Ford fam, my first time doing a forum. So I have a 1994 Ford ranger that has a new 4.0 engine with 21k miles. The body and condition of my truck is not the best though so I was wondering if I take my engine out and put it for example in a 2001 Ford ranger 4.0 will it work?

Welcome to the forum

No, on the 1994 to 2001 4.0l swap

The 1990-2000 Ranger used the 4.0l OHV engine, good reliable engine, but couldn't be over heated or head would crack

2001-2011 Ranger used the 4.0l SOHC engine, quite different engines, so the computer, and wring in the 2001 won't work with the 1994 motor, and the 1994 computer and wiring won't work in the 2001 easily and both would have to be manual transmissions
The 4.0l SOHC engines had timing chain issues, from 2001-2003/4, and engine has to be pulled out to fix the problem, so those years can often be found with bad engine at a good price, i.e. "mechanics special".

You CAN swap anything, lol, this would just be much more involved than just swapping engines.

If you can find a 4.0l Ranger with good body in the 1990-2000 model year range the swap would work, you would need to used the upper and lower intake from the "new" Ranger on your 1994 4.0l engine

Why not... put a 5.0L in the 2001 ?

Sell the '94 with the new engine... buy a 5.0L and an after market three-wire engine harness... or use an Explorer Harness, break even.
Which harness is better, I don't know but I am sure someone on this site will know the best way to go !

My original intention for my '03 edge, was to use the Three-Wire Harness, I thought it would work easier.

The 4.0L thing doesn't sound like it is going to come together, if the 2001 is in good shape, go the 5.0L route, I do not think you will be disappointed.

Because he doesn't have a 2001, he's just trying to figure out how new of truck he can go to put his 94 4.0 OHV into.

I'm sure he read that correctly.

He's suggesting he sell the whole thing and go for the 5.0 into any 2001 in better shape.

My suggestion is maybe find a 94 in better shape?

...unless those 2001 headlights look good to Romalily

Thanks but I understood, since he mentioned a 2001, I "assumed" he had a lead on one and was just trying to put two and two together.
Also, 2001 started the larger Cab, which I like the best of all often Rangers I have owned or drove and I am no electrical wizard but I think the electrics in the 2001 up swap the Explorer Electrics better.
Again, I'm guessing here.
Thanks for the comment to straighten me out, appreciate your concern ! LoL !

Thanks for the backup cliffdog2004, I do put my own thought in my posting sometimes, ok more than sometimes, so "2011Supercab" could have been correct in his assumption but in this case as you said I did read it and made an assumption that may still be correct... we need to hear from "Romalily"!

No worries, and I saw where the translation may have gotten lost. No fault from anyone.

I wonder if Romalily grew a bit tired of the early 3rd gen style and wondered about the mid-3rd gen style.

Also...isn't 2001 the final production year of the 5.0 Explorers?

Maybe cosmic forces are aligning

LoL on the Cosmic Forces... May the Force be with you !

I am not sure of what the last year was for the Explorer vs the 5.0L W engine, I wish it had gone to '03 and I might have had some ammo to use when I ask the California DMV about swapping a 5.0L in my truck.
If it was in a Ford vehicle in the same year as my truck I might have pushed it.
When Romalily checks in we will see where the thoughts came from.
