I have a 1988 2.9L Ranger, I put a MagnaFlow Glass Pack, and had it turn down right after the muffler. it doesnt sound like a weed eater or anything. it has a Deep, Quality sound. it made it sound like a V8 hotrod. and its cheap. total cost for me was about $90. a MagnaFlow and a GlassPack. cant go wrong.

i currently run the mbrp catback, to turndown after axle.. i enjoy it.. its not obnoxiously loud in low rpms but 2500+ it purrrrs nicely.. (4.0L)
a lot has to do with your personal preference.. good luck!
