New Ranger....

Well i need opinions.

I found two Rangers that are the front runners for replacing my totaled one.

One is an 05 Edge, 3.0L/ Auto black 2wd and stock. Asking price $9,400. Its a private party deal and i have enough from the insurance to pay it all off at once. Its got under 31K miles.

The other is an 06 4.0L Auto XLT 2wd DSG. Stock as well, less than 41K miles. Its a Ford dealer asking $13,998 for it, but AAA has a deal with them where the price will be $100 over invoice through the fleet department, but i will likely have to finance a little bit to cover the cost of the truck.

Opinions on either? I dont know much about the 06 because i havent gone down to the dealer yet, but ive talked to the fleet sales guy already.

I need a truck soon, but im gonna check out the Black 05 Edge tomorrow morning.

Oh, both are Supercabs. I dont want a regular cab,

If u can pay it off it'd be your best bet.. but u wouldn't owe that much more on the 06.. so either way ur gonna drive it so its all up to you

Get the 05 if the condition is the same. Less mileage for less money FTW

I vote 05 as well unless you want the extra power of the 4.0.

i went to look at the 06 today and decided that its not the one. Im gonna check out the Edge tomorrow and see what i think of it.

THe 06 was nice overall but it had a few flaws that would bug the crap out of me. First of all there was a dent on the hood. a good sized one that they could probably repair. being a painter myself, i would nitpick the repair to death. Ive worked with many shops that do used car work. They dont care about them or the quality of the repair if they are just gonna go out on the lot and be sold. There was also a series of large gouges on the airbag cover on the steering wheel. That would bug me, and not sure if theyd repair it for free.

I also looked at new ones. with the AAA buying program and the rebates, a NEW 09 Sport with a 4.0 and an auto would be less than 17K. Cheap! BUT.... factor in tax... interest and higher registration for a new car.... im kind of against that too.

I did like the power of the 4.0 ALOT. it also runs smoother than the 3.0 does. However... its not a deal breaker... but damn.... the 4.0 is nice.

Went to look at the 05 Edge today and its also not gonna be the one. The people selling it were great people but the truck had been in a wreck before and looks like it was repaired on the cheap. Lots of little screws were missing and the hood didnt fit quite right. Not sure if there was an axle problem, but i heard a whining coming from the back. It could have been tire noise, but im not 100% on that.

Sooooooooo.......

Now im looking at new ones. With rebates and the X Plan, i can get a new Ranger Sport SC with a 4.0 and the usual options for less than 17K. I might just go that route, but i dont know yet. I gotta see if its worth it to me. Im a cheap bastard, but i CAN afford the extra its gonna cost. its just convincing me that i gotta do it lol.

I haven't owned one, but used one for a work truck for a while. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great.

They are offering a total of $4K in rebates around here in addition to the X Plan. Plus i think right now there was an extra $500 off with the XPlan as well so a $22K sticker is in the $16K range at the moment.

BTW - my last truck was a 3.0 with a manual trans, and it was ok. It was slow, but it was still acceptable. With the auto though, i dont think i would be able to stand it for long. I drove a 3.0/Auto today on a test drive and yeah, it was noticeably slower. The 4.0 with the auto still felt stronger than my 3.0 with the stick was. So i think im gonna go that route.

I'd go with the DSG 06 XLT all the way. However, since you didn't like it due to some flaws, I would narrow your search down to 4.0L supercabs. Lots of those around. Plus, don't forget to look at the B4000s. Lots of those around and they are usually better equipped than a 4.0 XLT or Edge.

Look for a solid front axle ranger...like an older one. There so much more reliable, cheaper to lift. Independent front suspension is the weekness in all trucks these days. Besides riding a bit smoother i havent heard one reason why independent front end is better than solid front axle.
Just my opinion...good luck finding a new truck though...its an exciting time!

Yes you can finance with the X Plan just like every other vehicle. Youll be buying it with the fleet manager.

FYI a sticker price of 25.8K on a 4 door FX4 would be knocked down to around 20K flat with the incentives and the X Plan. Its a good way to save some cash for doing nothing but being an employee of a supplier.

Thats kind of where im at right now. Still open to new ones, but still got the eye out for a used one. I came back from looking at an 05 Edge SC 4 door with a 4.0 and stuff. Used at a dealer but they didnt like my offer so i left. No biggie. Its hard to ask $15.8 for a used truck with 45K miles when i can get a new one for $500 more thats equipped the same (minus the rear doors, which i dont really care about).
