Anyone know how to disassemble power mirrors?

Is it possible to take apart the ranger mirrors?

I'll use these f-150 mirrors as an example

What i am looking to do is take the main chrome part and separate it from the black plastic base that bolts to the door, can it be done easily without damaging the mirror or base?

I want to do it to this type Ranger mirror

Thanks

What exactly are you trying to do?? Here's what i got out of it....you want to seperate the base from the mirror housing(the part that pivots)...right?

Why?

I am talking about separating the whole thing into 2 pieces.

We have folding style mirrors, you know where the mirror folds in, right?

Thats where i want to separate them - Separate the base where it bolts to the truck from the main part of the mirror.

they almost seem like they have a 'peg' type deal inside so im not really sure that they will come apart and still be able to go back in...

have you taken them off the truck yet? maybe theres some screws or something when you look in from where it mounts to the truck

Idk about screws because the main shell pivots from the base...

It seems like they should just be clipped or snapped into place. Purpose of this thread is so i don't brake my nice color matched mirrors, thats why i haven't messed with them.

if you take the mirror off the truck, it is probblay held together using a pin clip, its a pin with a slot down the middle and you gotta squeeze the two pieces together and push it in the hole, when it clears the head of the pin the tension is released and the mirror is mounted and can pivot. so to reverse this, ull need a pair of needle nose pliers.... now, this MIGHT be how its put together, i havent actually looked at them...

The plastic pivot on my 03 mirror snaps into place without fasteners. I have never tried but it looks like it might be possible to separate the two parts without damage.

Here's a picture inside a 2002~2005 power mirror. Looking at the lower right inside the housing, you can see the plastic fingers of the "one way" snap lock on the pivot where the power mirror wires emerge:

Problem 1) Even though they appear outwardly identical and will interchange as a complete assembly, Ford changed the internals of the power mirrors between 2001 and 2002 model year. The 95~2001 mirror platform is a completely different design which makes it more difficult to remove the glass insert.

Possible problem 2) It seems to me that I remember some Ranger/Explorer mirror that had the end of the plastic pivot melted over with heat in a way that would make it difficult (impossible?) to separate and then reassemble. I don't know if that applies to your 2001 or not. You'd have to look inside and that requires that you remove the glass for access to the pivot.

Go here for an explanation on how to remove the glass from a 95~2001 Ranger mirror.

Thanks Bob, that helps a lot.

Oh and Maurice, this has nothing to do with the 06 mirrors - nice try.
