my friend has a 4.2l f150 that thing sucks! there is not enough power to it, and my other friend has a 4.6l that thing has a nice motor, gets pretty okay gas mileage and power, ive also had a 1993 f150 5.0 and that had power to it but the gas for that was like $130 to fill, and i still i have my 4.0 ranger and i have to say it all depends on what size truck you want if you want either the 4.0 or the 4.6

I beg to differ, mine with the 31's and she will peel them rear ones with a little throttle. 3.73 gears (at least have these or 4.11 or better on a four banger or 3.0) And it sits as high or higher than most stock 1/2 tons. Plenty of air drags this truck.

Evan so, there is plenty of get up and go for what most need in a small truck.

I wouldn't tow anything too heavy though. However, I would think mine would handle our 16' bass boat okay, though front lockout hubs would be better as it would allow 2wd low. Don't bother towing more than say, 1500 lbs on hilly roads with a 2wd only Ranger, since you can't put lockout hubs on and use 2wd low for extra grunt.

Lack of A/C? Sissy. Open the rear slider and crank the fronts open and it'll be nice in there.

As for seats, I think the Ranger seats are quite plush. Though I can't say much about the newer ones since things probably have been 'cheaped out' somewhat, and since mine is a 96...

But my wife wants me to get a USED F150 with 100,000km or more for the same money. If she would go camping and on road trips with me a lot it would be a no-brainer, keep wifey happy, get an F150, but she will hardly ever spend more than 20 minutes at a time inside the thing, it's mostly a commuter, so how much should I worry about her buttock/seat issues? I' the one gonna be living with it in traffic every day.
You can always put some leather explorer bucket seats in the truck. Or just keep the stock ones. I used to drive 12 hours every weekend with my old ranger and my **** never hurt.

well in my experience Ive had 2 f 150s and 2 rangers. both the 4.6 and the 5.4. brutal on fuel. the 5.4 was worse obvy, little more pulling power but i dont know if its that important. trucks were great but expensive to drive around lol. the 3.0 ranger i had was great. loved it. beat the tar out of it, little underpowered, but great truck. now my 07' with the 4.0l. by far my fav truck out of all them. way better milleage, faster off the line, and does everything i ever ask it too. cheaper to maintain also. i would go with a ranger hands down.

The 4.6 is defiantly worse then the 5.4. The weight ratio sucks an I get about 12 city whereas 5.4's are getting 14-16 city.

If only the 5.4 was as reliable as the 4.6 though :/

These pretty much resume my pov.
The 3.0 is very reliable, not as powerful as the soch 4.0, but you're not buying a sports car, so who cares.

While you're a student, go with a safe bet, you'll have plenty of money to waste on a full size truck once you graduate and find a job

I had the choice, i picked the ranger. The first time i sat in one, i thought it was way too small, but once i positioned the seat right, there was more than enough space (supercab ftw).

That's true! But other people (like me) have very recently googled "F150 vs Ranger" to help make our own decisions - I bought a Ranger Saturday after reading this thread, and other similar threads.

I had the money to buy either one and went with the ranger. I'm also 43 years old and am not a small guy at 270 lbs. The 4.0 ranger for me made more sense. It's a lot easier to park in the garage and I'm averaging 21 mpg with 85% highway driving. I've owned 4 full size trucks in the past and just didn't need it for towing but I still wanted a truck and I'm completely happy with my decision. My 4.0 is backed by a 5 spd with 3.55 gears, stock wheels and tires (15's).

I didn't read through all the posts but do yourself a favor and get an F150. You'll regret it later if you get the ranger. Once you add a lift and tires to the 4.0 you'll be getting around 12 - 15mpg, no joke. Also, you can fit more in the bed of an F150, like a 4wd quad for example. This is the reason I still have a sport quad instead of a utility. It's got more space, has more power, and gets about the same gas mileage.

This thread is no longer valid because he got an escape anyway.
