My grandfather built a "utility" box you could call it for his Sierra. About 4ft(w) x 3ft(d) x 3ft(h), make of 1/2" ply and 1/2" x 1" support in all the seams, very strong and rugged. Sealed and painted in and out, dual locking shackles on the door and has held up fine for 10 years. Mainly used to hold the spare, gas can, coolant, oil and dirtbiking gear.

If you're willing to spend the time on finishing and detailing it I think it could turn out great and be plenty strong.

Here in WA I wouldn't make a box out of wood and toss it in the truck... definately spend some decent time finishing it... and make sure you take care of it...

I wouldn't do it anywhere without actually finishing it. Home made boxes generally look like crap IMO. One guy on here made a really cool one, though.

Check out craigslist. I see tool boxes for sale on there all the time.

Many years ago I built a plywood utility box for my truck. It turned out to be a big waste as I stored it in my toolshed for about 10 years and all the tools inside got rusted out. Yes it got water damaged and had to be thrown out. It was heavy, expensive, time consuming to build, and I am light years better off with my current aluminum toolbox made by Kobalt and sold at Lowe's.

I wouldn't waste time building one out of wood. You can get Aluminum one though, but I just bought one of these: Tractor Supply Co. 44 in. Toolbox - 1090993 | Tractor Supply Company

My grandpa has had one of years, holds a bunch of crap, mine is only half full I need to find more stuff to put in it lol

Why wouldn't you want an aluminum one? They are lightweight, durable, don't rust as fast as steel, won't rot like wood will, and they are CHEAP!

Sure, you could probably build a bigger box for your truck then getting a used one off craigslist, and it would probably be about the same price, but I think I would rather do something different for a summer project then build a tool box.

yeah i will agree with you on that, but until you meet me you will find that i would rather build something myself first, i dont know why, my dad is the same way, he built a wood center console box for his chevy luv one time. but i need a summer project so i dont go insane over summer. idk what to do

It does dependant upon the percentage of alloy of other materials. It can rust, however usually just surface rust.
