i believe our engines are designed for 87 octane, anything more is a waste. i get the best MPG on 87 non ethanol.

Waste unless you have a tune for it, then it's only a mild increase in perf.

I'd have to disagree. I used to travel roughly 100 miles per day in my 3.0. A small-town casey's sold 89 octane gas cheaper than 87. If I ran the 87, I would see about 17 mpg highway. It would bump to mid 18's on the 89. you'd think the highway mpg would be better; but no, hills cut that down a lot due to constanly going in and out of O/D.

Seriously though, how does one get the 22 mpg that these trucks are rated to get?? My next fuel purchase will be pure E-85 since it's 30 cents cheaper atm. I sometimes wish I still had my '02 Focus. 30+ MPG on highway with aftermarket intake, headers, exhaust, and a heavy foot!

If fuel economy is the reasoning you are making the wrong choice. You'll only get worse mileage with oxygenated fuel.

I don't get "good" gas mileage period. I used to see 300+ miles driving pure highway. Now I see about half that driving in town. How could it get any worse? If it means paying $40 for a fill-up versus $45 for normal gas, I'll take the savings. Besides, this will be the 1st time I have tried E-85.

Oxygenated fuels have a reduced energy density, which results in increased fuel consumption. E-85 fuels are only designed for flex fuel vehicles. You are only asking for problems running it in a vehicle that's not designed for it.

My truck has a flex-fuel 3.0L. In all honesty, I think the tremor package should have included the 4.0 motor.

I would burn whatever the manufacturer calls for. It will not hurt the engine to run a slightly higher number and may even give you better mileage but you just have to see if it is economically doable. I hate now that you cannot find pure gasoline anymore without that crappy ethanol in it. That does nothing but help corn farmers and could be detrimental to engines.

you might be paying less but you'll be doing it more.

No no no, this is stupid. Don't ever do what the manufacturer says. They may say 87 is the best gas for your engine but who are they to know? They're only a multibillion dollar corporation who invest massive amounts in money and you're the smartest corn farmer in Kansas so you know what exactly your engine operates best on.

By the way, 40$ to fill your tank is cute.

I ran 93 octane when I didn't have a choice after one of the hurricanes. Truck ran like **** the entire tank... would ping like hell, idle like crap and got no improvement in mpg's ... wast of money...
