Finally no more open diff come sat!
:biggthump I'll break it in fairly nicely between now and the Orlando meet. Come then, we'll see what it will do!! Finally no more one wheel peels! no more boring half-fishtails in the rain! stupid one wheel stuck in the mud situations! now when i get stuck-stuck, ill dig deeper! lol...well maybe thats not so good, but never-the-less
Rebuilt 28spline, Ford Racing clutches, fresh diff carrier bearings http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...r/DSCF0010.jpg Very jazzed, truck has always impressed me for being an open diff, dying to lock 'em up :biggthump |
Nothing is better than a locked rear diff doing donuts in an ice covered parking lot! Weeeeeeeeeeee
Congrats on the upgrade to a LSD |
your still going to get one wheel peel when your really stuck in the mud, the clutch will eventual slip and make it act as an open diff if your really stuck. i like lockers better for off road cause if your kinda stuck to the point where an LSD would start slipping you can probobly muscle out with a locker.. the locker will break the axle before it lets one tire spin
^^ thats the bad part about it
yeah i ment to say "but that bad part is the locker will break an axles before it lets the one tire spin". but you get my drift
If you are that stuck you're clutches are slipping, better just quit lol. your ass is stuck! lol
So do you have to take out the gears? I'm curious on installation...I'm still 1 wheel peel as well.
Just the ring gear comes out on the old carrier. Pinion stays in. Theoretically factory carrier to factory carrier swap should be close specs wise. Check the pattern stock, change it, check the pattern again and adjust accordingly
If those clutches are new, they'll still be nice and tight, and act as a locker for you. I only have maybe 4000-5000 miles on my Trac Loc and I chirp the inside tire all the time around corners simply because the clutches arent worn in yet. I've been hoping they'd start wearing so I can throw my Aussie Locker back there... but I may go ahead and just do it as it'll be a while before those break in.
You did install friction modifier, right?
Yea the clutches are new, it should be a pretty tight diff. |
I like the LS idea! I am looking at powertrax though :(
Yea, it cost me...well.
LSD $40shipped - ebay, worn out clutches bearings $30 -napa clutches/friction modifier $50shipped -ebay shims (just in case) $15 grand total of $135 for a rebuilt, ready to roll diff should last me another 50,000miles I'd imagine. Powertrax is like $350? Won't wear out though, full locker...Its nice to have the unlocking function, but thats only on decel, which on the street may suck. But i'm sure someone could get used to it just fine. stuff i needed anyway since i'm rollin up on 50k miles diff gasket- couple bucks gear lube $15 |
Very good prices. I'm not one for setting gears though...I dont' like messing with that and transmissions.
Yea i've never done it, but understand the concept. I'll let you know how it goes. Figure it'll take me 2hours if i'm just taking my time. I've been told I should just have to keep the stock shims where they are at and check it..it 'should' be right. But I may have to mess with it. Do you have to pull the carrier for the power trax? I'd think it wouldn't clear the ring gear...so basically the extra step in the L/S is checking the pattern and adjusting. Thats not too bad, its the pinion thats a pita!
Crap well something came up and i got a little too impatient...doesn't look like its going in Satuday... :puppy_dog:borladuck
Because its already in!:biggthump:biggthump http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...DSCF0002-2.jpg |
Awesome! Glad to see you already have it in! Now go ruin some tires and let us know what ya think.
Good to see. I guess that too is why the powertrax is more money; doesn't wear out and no need to remove the gears, just spiders.
No. How-To's? lol Let us know if ya like it, im sure ya will :approve:
Nice man, I wanna do this sometime as well.
Did you have to adjust it?
Well i only got about 6miles on it today, so far so good. Got one tire on wet grass, other on the street...loaded the brakes up and gassed it. Got a chrip from the tire on the street, and off i went. No one tire fire!! :sgrin:
Also actually got a half-ass donut out of it in a coldesac gossing the throttle, it was no 'Cuda donut...but alright..better than it was! Adios open diff :fest06: |
im doing two of these at the moment. . . only im using an open diff and turning it into an l/s that and ive got an l/s sittin here and another on the way. . .its quite easy. . .took me id say 10 mins to pull the axles and the diff out. . . .curious what did u torque everything to?
10mins to jack it up, pull the wheels, pull the drums, loosen the diff cover, let the fluid drain mostly, remove the diff cover, remove the center pin bolt, slide the pin out, push the axles in, remove the c-clips, break the caps loose and pop the diff out? Damn, you're good! lol Not saying it's hard, but 10mins has gotta be some record, somewhere:hypnotize:sly:
77ft/lbs for the caps and ring gear bolts. |
I am installing one with my 4.88's in the next couple months.
i have one 8.8 under my truck. . i have a spare 8.8 i picked up sittin in my garage. . .i didnt take the drums apart. . .they fell apart. . .im rebuilding the spare one then sliding it under my truck and redoing that one. . makes it easier
