Well, apparently I failed at this too. My fog lights wont activate at all anymore. Did I cut the right wires? If so, please give me some trouble shooting steps.

 

Just so you know: this mod is technically illegal in most states and could cause you warranty problems. Perform it at your own risk.

Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.

There are 4 or 5 large connectors at the SJB and the plastic shells are color coded for easy identification.

Find the the 22-position BLACK connector and then the OR/LG (orange wire w/light green stripe). Cut the wire 2" from the BLACK connector and carefully tape off the short end coming from the BLACK connector. (CAUTION: Do NOT confuse with the other OR/LG in the 32-position GRAY connector!).

Now find the 32-position BLACK connector and locate the brown/white wire coming from it. This is the wire you need to tap into to get the fogs to work with high, low and parking lights. Use your favorite method to tap the leftover harness end of the OR/LG into the BN/WH.

Reconnect the battery and test.

 

So I want to grab the wire from the 32 position instead of the 29? Can you confirm that I should do this instead of the step posted on G-E:

 

32-possible wire positions but not all of them are filled. What I posted is just a short version of the same procedure as outlined in Brian's How-to.

This mod has been done several times and it works on 2004~2006. If you are having problems, then you have identified the incorrect wire(s) or you have a bad splice or fuse #2 is blown.

 

I'm sorry, but I'm new to electrical work, and thus a bit confused. Brian's How-to refers to a 29-pin connector. Is your reference to 32-position point to a particular position on the 29-pin connector? Or is it just another way of referring to the 29-pin connector?

I don't have a fuse #2. My manual refers to fuse #2 as "Amplifier (Tremor audio system only)". I did however look at fuse #31 that my manual refers to as "Foglamps" and it appears fine. I'll check over the other conditions too, thanks.

 

The Tremor fuse #2 is under the hood. The SJB fuse #2 is for the trailer tow running lights and that is what should be powering the foglamp mod.

A connector can have 32 positions but not all of them may be filled with pinned wires - hence Brian referring to a 29 pin connector. They are both the same thing.

 

My apologies, I wasn't kidding when I said I'm new to this kind of work, SJB fuse #2 is fine.

Alright, well since it's fairly dark I was able to do the one man test. I re-connected the orange/green wire and my fogs activated. I re-connected the white/brown wire and I saw no change. Does this tell us anything?

Did you tap into the BN/WH with the OR/LG? By that, I mean that the OR/LG should be teed into the BN/WH. If you just cut the BN/WH and connected one side to the OR/LG, then the mod may not work properly.

 

The last time I talked to him, he seemed to be more involved with his Miata projects.

Bob, I really appreciate you taking the time to write this all out for me. Unfortunately, my inexperience makes this difficult for me to understand. What exactly are the differences between "tap into" and "teed" ??

I spliced the OR/LG & BN/WH. I then proceeded to intertwine the wires. I saw no results after trying various ways to connect the wires, so I did nothing permanent.

 

not to be jerk, but wouldn't it just be easier to add a set of driving lights and wire them up to the highbeams? all of this splicing and fuse pulling and what not seems a lot to do just to use your fogs and highbeams at the same time.

Well, my understanding is that its an extremely easy mod. Were I simply needing to piece the two wires together this mod would have taken no more than 15 minutes and $1 to complete.

This probably doesn't help, but start over with the instructions. Begin at step one and re-check everything. I almost cut the wrong wire when I did this mod, but I caught myself.

29pin- find brown/white wire make sure it's brown and white, there is a purple that kinda looks brown.

22pin(above 29pin) find orange/light green

splice and connect wires

tie up loose end so it's safe.

 

Bent pin on relay here also. Good luck on that wireing .

 

Well I figured it out. I had the wires reversed. I guess I was just so focused on identifying the correct wires that even when I was re-reading the instructions I focused in on making sure the wires were correct. Easy mod if you do it right the first time!

The 99~2003 owners have it the easiest with the simple "bent pin" mod. Most other years require a minor wiring change.
