if the vehical detects slippage it automatically goes into 4wd, and shes got LEATHER HEATED SEATS! LEATHER! for $22K. mine retailed for $22000 and i got just a crappy bench seat (i say crappy cause shes got leather seats AND their heated)

and look at the engine, while half the size, has almost as much power... and shes got power windows, locks, cruise, all those goodies, plus anb outside temp and electronic compas.....

judging by this ugly SUV, what u get vs what u pay is alot better than anything ford has to offer.

There starting to turn around somewhat. I just purchased a 2006 sport which stickered for 25,200 and after rebates and x-plan it was around 19,500. If they will only do smoething to equal Gm's red event they will sell even more.

the ford ranger has actually gone down in sticker price. when i bought my '01 4x4 edge back in '01, the sticker price was $25,650. today, the same truck ('06 sport) with the same engine, 4x4, etc...) was listed at $23,950. usually new vehicle prices go up but after 5 years, the ranger has come down!

Jeep is also owned by Diamler Chrysler. They make all their money off of Mercedes, so they can knock down the price of their other vehicles. :p
No im jk.
Jeeps have always been cheaper than Fords. They weigh next to nothing, which accounts for alot of the difference in cost. But they're also POPULAR! Everywhere you look you see a Jeep os some shape or form. The more of them they sell, the lower they can make them cost. Basic economics.

If you compare the Compass with it's true Ford counterpart, the Escape (and the Mercury Mariner), you will see that your sister really didn't get much more of anything that FML doesn't already offer for a similar price. There's nothing special about the Compass.

Yep, an Escape XLT with 4WD is about the same price.

The Compass and Ranger are two entirely different classes of vehicle, you really can't compare them. A Ranger requires more raw material to build (heavy ladder frame, more sheet metal, more hardware) and has a much more stout drivetrain. The Compass is essentially an AWD car.

anyways...isn't the compass an SUV? You can't compare a ranger pickup to an SUV....that's apples and oranges.

4 Cylinders, is like Taking your sister to Prom! She Might Be The prettiest Girl there, But You better not let your friends hear you bragging about what's under the hood.

"Transmissions: Continuously Variable Transaxle II $1,150"

My Snowmobile has the same transmission and I didn't pay a Dime extra for it! I'd take the sled over a Coampass anyday. At least I wouldn't be Embarrassed to show a Chick my Sled.

No such factory "upgrade" exists for any 2WD Ranger. Your XL was built with a 7.5" and 28-spline axles. The only available factory axle option on an XL is a limited slip 7.5" 28-spline.

Sell your Ranger, buy a Compass, and join us in Wharton, lol.

It's better how than an Escape? You look at one vehicle from another company and deduce that the entire Ford line is in trouble?

Whew. Sorry I even read this thread. Logic appears to be lacking in the initial premise...

We have a 4.0l jeep Cherokee.....You can tell where it is parked because there is oil on the ground.....Oil pan leaks, valve covers leak, etc.....I know two others with the same issue, Uncurable w/ new gaskets.....Professionals have tried several times with no success. Ford all the way.....Tacos are nice, but approx. 33% more in price, I'll stick with Rangers!

The Jeep Compass is a car based SUV, not a truck at all. It uses a transverse mounted engine much like many sub compact cars. Most of the reviews I've seen have all said it's not much of a 4x4 and has little to know real off roadability at all.

Here's a few examples:

http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpconta...4/pageNumber=1

http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtest...mited-4x4.html

It's probably fine for most urban settings or a grocery go getter, but I wouldn't compare to a Ranger in any way. It's closest Ford competitor would be the Freestar, but that is also what they consider a crossover vehicle and not a true truck based SUV.

As far as Ford being in trouble, I have to say that I am a firm believer in "BUY AMERICAN". Ford and GM wouldn't be in such trouble if people didn't get rooked into believing that the American vehicles are inferior. American vehicles have come a long way as far as quality and have matched or in most cases surpassed most foreign cars.

I tried the import truck thing once, in my opinion that truck was pure junk, I went back to a Ford in a big hurry, and would never buy another import.
I had bought a Toyota pickup since it was so much cheaper at the time, but these days that's no longer the case, most of the imports are far more expensive than the domestic vehicles.
The Toyota developed severe rust in less than 2 years, the engine failed at 3800 miles, the trans had to be replaced before delivery, and then three more times in a little over a year for noise, plus the A/C compressor blew up twice within a year.
I had replaced a high milage Ranger at that time and had to go back to a Ranger soon after. I kept the Ranger I replaced the Toyota with for 5 years and 260,000 miles and it was still going strong when I sold it, I have had only Ford and Dodge trucks every since.

I am also not so sure how American Jeep and Mopar is since they have become a German owned company. Most of their engines are German, and I suppose that they will slowly integrate other components as well. The same goes for most other foreign makers that assemble vehicles here so they can say that they're made in the USA. I don't consider a car or truck that's made up of all foreign made and engineered parts American buy any means.

I have always prefered Ford products, and if it came to the point that there was no more Ford Motor Company, I'd just have to keep my current Fords going forever. There's no way I'd ever buy a foreign car again.
I own four Ford Trucks, ('92, '94 & '95 Rangers, a '91 E150 Van), two Dodge B3500 vans (a '91 and a '96), one Mercury Grand Marquis, and two Ford cars ('05 Crown Vic, & an '80 Pinto).
I could not see ever replacing any of my vehicles, either personal of business with any of the foreign makes, for reasons of both cost and principle.

well oil leak or not the 4.0 in jeeps are great engines, they run forever and are reliable, ive never had a problem in my old jeep and know alot of people that feel the same......

but like it was said earlier, you cant compare a compass to a ranger, but yes you are correct saying that ford is in trouble, there true competition (tacoma, frontier, colorado, etc.) is kicking there ***, its just that the true ranger fans keep buying them like us to keep there sales up.......

LOL......Nice!!!! Too funny!!

As for everyone flamming the Compass.....I wouldn't buy it, I'd get the 4 door Wrangler, but congrats on the purchase.

And as for Ford all the way.....LOL, I don't think so. Send the Ford pom-poms back to Ford...they need the money.

My next vehicle will not be a Ford.

well, I don't think this spells doom for Ford
car - not a truck
at least she got the 'big' engine
outfit that vehicle with popular options like a sunroof and an upgrade to stereo, then check the price

??? - where is it assembled - ???
