your front brakes have a wear indicator. You should be able to reach in and feel them to get a quick idea of how much you have left on your pads. The wear indicators have a constant squeal when you apply your brakes. You'd know it if you heard it.
Small sqeaks are just your pads moving around when lightly apply your brakes.
I got Bendix lifetime warranty shoes for my rear. I would advise against them. I think the material is so hard to extend life that it dosn't stop as well as something that would wear out quicker.

The life warranty means that the brake pads will wear down your rotors quicker. Pads are cheaper to replace than rotors.

drums in this case, which are not all that expensive. But yes, they will wear faster. I do regret spending the extra for the lifetime. I think these were the orgional pads and if they lasted 100k, I doubt the truck will outlast the new pads. lol

51,203 miles on my manual trans'ed FX4.. Just changed the front pads last weekend. They were past the wear indicators but I feel I could have milked another 3k or so out of them. Unfortunately my rotors were warped. Got the rotors turned and slapped on new pads. Did both outer tie-rod ends while we had the things apart; they were in sad shape. Parts bill ran me $96. New pads are Duralast Gold from AutoZone. They have the nice little anti-squeal plate pre-riveted on the back. Made in USA too! So far they work..
Can't get over the quantity of rust down there. My uncle (a pro mechanic) recently moved back up this way w/ all his air tools. Pneumatic tools help.. a lot! Gotta get me a compressor.
