Fuel pump

I was just sitting here wondering how many miles I get after the gas light goes on. Will it hurt the fuel pump to run it till its out of gas or will it hurt anything else? Seems like I have heard the pump is cooled from the gas. So anyone have any thoughts.

Do not make driving on empty a habit, if you want your pump to live a normal life.

x2. I've always been told that if you run near empty it's much harder on the pump.
