i just hite 30k and ford said its time to change the fuel filter they want 50$ to change it. that semed high to me would i be better off doing it myself or sould i have them do it. what would it take, where is it and how much to do it my self.

 

its easy do it yourself

 

The filter should be on the drivers side frame rail. It's easy to do, although you'll need the tool to remove the mounting clips.

 

Fuel filters are always kinda dicey because of the danger of the fuel. The first time I didn't have the tool to remove the mounting clips, got down there and just had to cut the mounting clips off and replace with a short 3/8 inch size rubber hose and some clamps. It worked out ok, but it was a pain. Of course keep the smokers away, because the fuel will spill a bit. Good luck!

If you get the tool its a nothing job. I cant bring myself to pay a mechanic 50 bucks for a 5 minute job.

 

the tool i have is a piece of garbage, i had to sit there and play with for like half an hour to get the tool to work.

 

That little filter has caused some cursing by the best of men.

 

It gave me the reach around. The tool I had was a piece of crap. If you get the right tool then it should be pretty easy. Just dont force anything to the breaking point. If you try it and cant get it just take it in.

 

I could only get the 2 lines off at the gas tank side so I'm just going to take it in and have Ford deal with it. If they break a line then they have to replace it.

We didn't use that 'tool' at my work when we did mine. It literally took 5 min.

Guess it all depends on the year or your Ranger.

Some need the "A/C - Fuel Line tool" and others don't. My Ranger didn't need the tool, realizing this as the kit of 6 adapters didn't work, leaving me eating a few bucks. Ah well, they look good hanging on the wall in the garage. LOL

Back to the post.....my fuel filter was a snap to remove. The line from the filter to the engine just slid off the nipple, and the supply and return lines (marked with a green and orange plastic ring) just slid off when I used my thumb to push the colour taps in.

All in all, whether it's the tool or non-tool filter, it's a very quick do-it-yourself job.

 

as i was laying in the snow and looking at how to do it, i was thinking you know 50$ my be worth it.

 

its not worth 50$
some you done even need a tool for, u can use a flat head. but if you dont no how the clip works you can also break them very easily. i bought a master kit for all filters when i started at the dealer, it was a good investment, but i use them all the time you prob wont.
u also need a trans flush at 30k if its an auto. suprised they didnt try n sell u that to.

 

well she said its around 50$ but what is a trans flush going to cost. i didn't want to brake the clip and the fuil lines, so unless you want to do it i think i will have them do it

 

Do you see any problems with the clips being replaced by 2 inch rubber hoses with clamps? I've broken all three of the clips trying to get the filter off and have since replaced them with rubber hoses, no problems so far.

 

I'm a moron because I broke my clips. They're old and dry. But that doesn't matter, I'm just a moron.

 

thoes clips are easy to break if u dont no what ur doing or how they work. i think the trans flush is like $120 at our dealer.

 

The clips are real easy to break I tried to change my filter and two out of three clips shattered, didnt make me to happy. I got the problem figured out but it wasnt the cheapest fix. Ruined my day to say the least. Be carful and take your time. Dont force anything is all I can say

i wouldnt pay $50 for it all you do is push the tab in and pull on the hose but pull at the clip part you can use a flathead to push the tab in just be careful but honestly when they say fuel filter over the loud speacker im like YESSSSSSSS!
