Skyjacker_44 Nov 22, 2004 08:12 PM

ok i plan on running 35's at the beggining of the year...so should i go with 4:10 gears or 4:56's?

FoMoCoFiddy Nov 22, 2004 08:13 PM

gear question

Uh, i think you have 4.10's buddy....

4.56 would only kill your highway, you wont feel that big of a diff..

Skyjacker_44 Nov 22, 2004 08:23 PM

no i have the 3:73's <----or what ever stock is for a 2.3 2wd and I'm gonna end up running 35's i'm pretty sure I would have to have that big of a gear right? plus they will go in after the bigger tires

FoMoCoFiddy Nov 22, 2004 08:25 PM

Well, if you got 3.73's, you wont notice much of a change w/4.10's, if your gonna go up, go big

Skyjacker_44 Nov 22, 2004 08:56 PM

thanks leo ....my mom told me today that were getting my lift for X mas and i'ma fixing to buy my BL so i will be sitting 6 inch's taller and on 35's with 4:56's about a omnth after the first of the year i'm so stoked.. with 35's will i still lose my Highway?

Rand Nov 22, 2004 09:28 PM

A 2.3 and 35's.... ? or did I read your sig wrong.

4.10's can come stock with the 2.3(most likely)
3.73's are however a possibility.

stock was 225/75r15? or 28.3"

35/28.3 =1.24

4.10x1.24= 5.07

In other words I would go with the highest gearing that will fit in your axle..
which I think is 4.88( I could be wrong though)

Your gas mileage should be about 12-15mpg or so.

Your 35's will be about 4x as heavy as the stock tires also so even if you had 5.10 gearing you would still be significantly slower than stock.
Not to mention the lift is going to make it more like pushing a brick than it already is (air resistance)

Skyjacker_44 Nov 22, 2004 09:40 PM

i'm not looking for speed and my mom doesn't want me to have it so she figuers bigger means no speed and shes right i just want to be able drive it to and enter it in shows when i get it done there will be a bigger engine in there in the next year or so hopefuly"cross's fingers"......all this is just x mas and B day gifts from the family i'm Completely blown away..but this truck will stay on the street and will not see any off roading... but the gears are ordered. 4:56's From 4 wheel parts.. o btw they have a huge sale goin on like 10% off i saved like 100 bucks if you looking to regear anytime soon any more coments? I know the 2.3 with 35's is a stupid idea but i'm not planing on going anywhere fast 60-65 MPh is all i need to get 2 and from waco and dallas every now and then...thanks for all the im put it helped alot!

Rand Nov 22, 2004 11:09 PM

I was not saying it was stupid..
I am sorry if it came over that way.
It is your truck to do whatever you want with.

Rand

It is however something I wouldnt do.
I'd put the money into buying a 4x4 ranger and offroad it lol.

Skyjacker_44 Nov 22, 2004 11:19 PM

well i agree..about the 4x4 thing i used to own a jeep....but umm yeah sand in the tank form punk ass kids landed me in the ranger forums lol.. i'd love to have a 4x4 but i knwo it's not smart but i'v always wanted a big truckand i do plan on doing a SAS down the road...when i get another beater car...and i'm pretty sure my 2.3 can handle the beating it will take when all this happends if not more of a reson to drop a 302 in....but my main question is with the 4:56's and 35's will it still be drive able on the highway i understadn the whole pushing a brick thing.. couldn't hit 70 in my jeep going down hill...anyway thanks for the imput and i didn't take it as being stupid i just know of alot of guys that run huige tires with 4 bangers becuase of the TQ

92 Ranger Nov 23, 2004 07:11 PM

if you do the sas tell me i am doing that down the road after a certain bill is payed of.... id go with the 4.56s personally...

optikal illushun Nov 23, 2004 08:02 PM

92ranger, a SAS for ur truck would be simple.

as for the 35"s on a 2.3L gearing...u have a manual so go higher. did u order an install kit? also remember ur front end is goin to take a beating, wheel bearings, brakes, ball joints, etc...

92 Ranger Nov 23, 2004 10:48 PM

i know it wouldnt be that hard its just i wanted to know how he faired with it and where he would mount the transfer case....

Skyjacker_44 Nov 24, 2004 12:19 AM

i'm aware about the front end probally giveing me problems and yes i ordered every thing..and saved about 100 bucks..the breaks will be upgraded as soon as funds alow it will be the first thing i do after every thing is on..but they shouldn't be that bad i down shift way more than useing my breaks.....92 ranger that seems to be the only problem where to mount the T case it would be a real easy to do the SAS......probally a good weekend of work would get you threw it to be driveable

Ranger1 Nov 24, 2004 05:46 AM

I have no first hand experience with this but I am thinking that 35's might be a lot for your 2.3L. My friend had an older ranger and he lifted it and put 35's on it and he put bigger gears in(I forget which size) but it was a dog. He said it was like driving a loaded mac truck he would down shift and speed up before hills to make it up them. He has since sold it.

My advice is always its your truck go for it if that is what you want, but think about gears, I doubt anyone else on here has a 2.3L rolling on 35's and unless you find someone that is all you can do is lift it and put the tires on and try it. If its a dog then try the next gear size up and see what thats like, then maybe if that doesn't work go with bigger gears.

Edit : You can be sure your MPG will go down from the greater wind resistance of the lift, heavier rolling weight of the 35's and increase gear size, so you got 3 things hurting your MPG.

Skyjacker_44 Nov 24, 2004 09:03 AM

yes..i'm pretty sure it'l be a big ol brick lol........and i'v been doing alot of thinking....i think i'm gonna test fit a 33 to see if i like the way it looks b4 i buy the 35's or what ever tire i will go with

Ranger1 Nov 24, 2004 10:35 AM

Another after thought the 2.3 gets good mileage now as it is how bad can it be when you are done ? Ford advertises like 28 MPG for the 2.3L ok so even if it goes to 17-18 umm thats about what I get now.

optikal illushun Nov 24, 2004 10:41 AM

i would have went with at least 4:88s or better yet 5:13s with a 4 pot and 35"s. 33s should be ok with 4:56s...

SilverTank Nov 24, 2004 10:56 AM

I know the stock 2001 2.3's came with 3:73 gears because the engine needs a lower gearing for torque. A 4 cyclinder usually hits it's peak torque at higher rpms, so Ford geared them lower to help pull stuff. Still not a great pulling motor at lower rpms, but the gearing does help. Running 4:56 should help spin the larger tires. Your top end speed will suffer, but that should make your mom happy.

In comparison, Brian (the guy I sold my Hurst shifter to) runs a 2.3 with 3 inch lift and fairly large tires. He drives out in the sand at Pismo, and seems to do quite well. He is one of the few people who has done a fair amount of engine mods to his Duratech.

this is a 97 2.3 on 35's with 4.56 gears and It got 20 mpg. I drove it 50+ miles each way every day. 5.13 gears would have made it like stock again.

Skyjacker_44 Nov 27, 2004 10:44 AM

thanks nice truck by the way do u still have it ?

Skyjacker_44 Nov 27, 2004 02:45 PM

i have a few questions...What is it like on the highway anyproblem getting it to and keeping it at 70mph? i know gas mileage will take a crap on me but how bad....and what lift do u have on it ?

badkarma Nov 27, 2004 06:45 PM

I did'nt have any problems on the highway, but i also had intake, exhaust chip, plugs and wires and electric fan. 4.56 gears were just fine but you don't use fifth anymore unless on flatland. To make it like stock and get fifth gear back I would have needed 5.13 gears. You also have to remember the higher you lift the more air you are pushing. tehcnically 4.56 gears with 32's are like stock 3.73 gears and stock tires. Also being undergeared makes the odometer turn slower so you think your getting worse gas mileage than you really are.

In those pictures it has a Fabtech 4" performance lift. Bent I-beams, 4" coils,Dual shock hoops, Extended Radius arms and 4" lift springs for the rear. There is also a 3" body lift. 35x12.50 Yokohoma Geolanders on 15x10 rockcrawler wheels.

The truck being so small and light went more places than almost any stock 4x4 that it played with. I kinda still have it. Now it's an extended cab
with 12" of lift. I work on it off and on. it's just mocked up for measurements for the King coilovers. Then theres the 302 going in. Lots of things to do to it especially with other projects going on.

Skyjacker_44 Nov 28, 2004 02:19 AM

so what ur saying is with the 35's i'm gonna be feeling ust aboutteh same power i'm feeling right now with 3:73's and 31's? so it's bareable and i won't be without being able to go on the highway comfortably...sorry i'm asking so many questions.. but i don't really wanta screw this truck up.. also u think with 3 inch spindle lift for the front and my 4 door explorer springs for the rear and a 3 inch body lift would be able to fit the 35's easy..

badkarma Nov 28, 2004 08:26 AM

with 4.56 gears it will be about the same. 5.13's would be the better choice. I don't how much the explorer springs are gonna lift your truck, but if the truck is lifted 6" you should clear 35's no problem. You might have some light rubbing issues when turning at full lock or when flexin out the rear end.

Skyjacker_44 Nov 28, 2004 10:37 AM

ok thanks for all the help!
