I was going up the skyway here in Buffalo. Its TWO lanes wide in the same direction. Theres no shoulders on either side and theres 4 foot re-enforced cement barriers on each side of the road.
I was about half way thru second gear, not even hard on the pedal.. I was doing at most.. 45mph.. I FORGOT I had my E-Locker LOCKED. I was on the inside lane. Theres 2 things that could have happened here, neither of which im sure of as this happened REALLY fast. The skyway is about 200 feet off the ground and goes over a harbor. Many of you can attest that I do NOT like bridges.. in fact, I'm petrified of them.
Senario 1, the car behind me bumped me I remember something bumping but I think it sounded like my ladder bars slappign the leafs.. the truck turned directly into the center cement guard. I somewhat bracked for impact and the airbags went off. The doctors believe this is what broke my right arm ( 4 or 5 hairline fractures ) , jammed my shoulder and caused my thumb to roll back to my wrist.
As I bounced off the center rail going backwards, I had the vehical aft of me's headlights aiming right at my drivers door.
I put the truck into reverse, turned the wheel as best as I could ( that nitrogen **** burned my arms pretty good and it was spraying all over the place ) .. I turned the wheel as hard as I could to the PASSENGERS side and punched the gas...
This causes the vehical to continue its rotation. When the truck was pointing at the outside wall, I jammed it back into first and punched the gas again... which with the tires pointing opposite of the rotational force, caused the truck to straighten out.
I never touched the outside rail at all. Only front end impact damage happened.
Senario#2, the left wheel gave and the right wheel grabbed real hard and pulled the *** end away from me ( I have enough power to do this.. EASILY )
What did the most bodily injury was how I sit. I put both my knees into that panel under the steering wheel. My right kneecap is broken. I have to see an orthopedic surgeon on monday. My left knee didn't fair so well either.
I'm fine and in good spirits. I don't have any pics of the vehical as I did NOT have my camera on me ( the first time I didnt have it.. thats probably why I wrecked ) . From the few glimpses I did get of Lexi.. she was one ****ed up *****. The bed was shifted over about an inch and a half behind the cab. The doctors say they think I was going faster then 45-50 because of the breaks in my right arm.
Unfortunatly, this dampens my plans on going to chi-town on the 4th of feb. I will be out of work till the 7th. If they have to do surgery, I will be out a LOT longer. I can't really walk at all, cant use crutches because of my right knee being broke and my right arm being broke as well.
At the V.A. hospital , the nurses were surprised how I still could smile and could actually laugh. I did crack off a few pictures. I have a gash in my left chin ( I believe its from the parking brake ) and the contusions where my knees impacted... my pants where the white paint from under the dash rubbed from the impact into my pants... The doctors were surprised how much adrenylyn I had pumping where I could stabalise the vehical , get out and actually walk some till the ambulance arrived... and even walk into the E.R. room.
It's a Jarhead thing I suppose....
I even did a bd in the hospital gown thingi... and they had some cool toys.
I called Q and this nurse started *****in about cell-phones causing damage to the equipment so her and I had at it 9 the pain started kicking in )

well the most important mod....of all....is the driver. you cant replace that. and sometimes, the wrecks u have at low speeds canbe the worse, because u KNOW u're not going fast...so what could the problem be?
God bless u and u'res, and i hope that u're road to recovery is a quick and plesant one.
is the damage to u're truck enough to deem it a total loss? or just replace a few parts?

Thank you all for the kind words.
I have a severe issue with bridges. I've jumped out of Planes from 22,800feet, yet a simple 200foot bridge bugs my nerves.
I have surgery in 8 hrs for my right knee as I broke the kneecap. I should be fine. As for the truck.. I'll be blunt.. If its not totalled, I will have the colission shop do the work on it. They will fill the bed holes from the flares in and shoot the whole thing a ' sonic pink ' scheme. I have a vailience from a ' thunder ' laying here as well ( guess where they pulled the vailience on the new STX from? ).
If its totalled, I will NOT get another Ranger. Its a good/reliable truck but I don't care for much of the territory that goes with it. I've done what I have done and wished to contribute the knowledge to others.. but for personal reasons by others, it was blocked. Made me feel ' wanted '. ( no, it wasnt RF ).
I AM looking into a Colorado. That truck is barely 2 years old and has a plethra of aftermarket parts already... Turbos, juice, and an assortment of go-fast parts.
I probably won't know anything for .. not till late tuesday. I don't think I'm going to want to deal with a wrecked vehical after a surgery thats going to determine how I walk.
I'm just glad I had Sparcos and Harnesses to hold me in. Its tough gaining control of a vehical when your half way in the passengers seat. Reguardless of whatever Vehical I do wind up with, Harnesses WILL go in. They have proven their worth.
I normally don't visit other sites but felt the need to say something for.. All of your kind reguards. I asked Zoom on GE to delete the thread Dave made there as ' what good is it if I can't see whom to thank for their kind words? '. It was good to know that at least some people have good wishes/concerns for others.
Be well all and have fun in whatever you do. Your only limits are in the seat of your pants.
