good or bad m.a.f.

Should my engine cut off or keep running if my m.a.f. is bad, I was recently told that if my engine cuts off when I disconnect the m.a.f. it means it's good but if it still runs it means it's bad....wanted to see if this is a valid opinion

Typically if the MAF is bad the OBD would be throwing lean or rich codes for both banks. As far as the unplug and see if it runs, I know that with mine when I had the intake tube off (there was no flow past the MAF) The engine immediately died. With a bad MAF the engine should probably keep running, but at the default fuel/air mix.
I would advise against unplugging it while running IMO you could just cause more problems. Others may comment differently just like some people see no problem with disconnecting the battery while the engine is running to test the alternator, I don't see it being a good idea.
Also, most of the time you can get away with just cleaning the MAF with a special cleaner and it will resolve the issue if its only dirty. MAF sensors don't go bad all that often.

Not a problem, maybe someone who has gone through a similar situation will chime in.

Have you figured it out yet? I've done some research and found out that if you unplug the mad when the engine is running, the engine should revert to its default programming as far as fuel/air ratio. It probably won't hurt. If you unplug it and it runs better, I'd say you need to get a new one. If it runs worse, you probably have another issue.

Changed the m.a.f. and cleared the codes, they haven't been back on yet.
