Extended Warranties - Yes/No? Difference between online/dealer/fordhq?
Hey guys, I'm coming up on my warranty deadline so I'm debating about getting an extended warranty. My main concern is the transmission, followed by the front suspension (already had warranty work done on it) so I'm looking at the powertrain warranty, or maybe the basecare warranty... no idea if it would be a good investment, looking to get some input on this.
Also, what is the difference between the ESP warranties through dealers, versus ESP through online sites (fordwarrantys.com, myfordwarranty.com, etc.), versus ESP through Ford HQ?
Price Quote breakdown for 7 year 100K powertrain warranty w/ $100 deductible:
Dealership - $1,900
Ford HQ - $1,600
FordWarrantys.com - $785
MyFordWarranty.com - $685
I asked the guy at Ford HQ what the difference was, he said the plans online are legit, they are being sold by local ford dealerships, but he is not allowed to compete with dealerships and can't make a comparison but that his plan is much better (BS alarm).
Thoughts???

Better check out the fine print on all of them.
Companies offering warranties often have all kinds of limits on what is and isn't covered, and requirements -e.g. you may not be able to modify or change much from stock, or they may not cover damages if, for example, you use your vehicle off-road, or you may have to keep each and every receipt for maintanence to prove it was done, etc.
Will you run over the mileage limit before the time limit? - determine how much you'll be using the truck; that will give you an idea of how long (in real terms) you'll be covered for, e.g. What is the distance? Or the time? of the extended warranty that the truck is likely to be covered before it runs out.
Then examine what likelihood there is of major components failing in the time that the extended warranty will run - best way to do this is just by researching forums and sites like this - they'll give you a head's up on likely trouble spots, and what to look out for - you'll be collecting a store of real life experiences with similar trucks, and get a realistic idea of what is likeliy to go wrong with your vehicle in the time/distance period of the extended warranty.
FWIW, the manufacturer's warranty should take care of most things that may fail, and in a reasonable time period.
Often extended warranties cost more than any repairs that they'll cover for the warranty period and won't be worth it. Personally, they didn't seem worth it to me.
My best advice was given first - check out the fine print on what they offer for the money.
Good luck whatever you finally decide.

I got a 75k mile extended warranty through ford when i bought my truck. only paid 1,000 with a military discount. all i have to do is bring it to any ford dealer, no jiffy lubes or anything. few states have restrictions (mississppi and alabama i think). i think it's kinda like car insurance. you're betting it'll break, and they're betting it won't.
if you want, i can look through the fine print and see what the restrictions are...

Of course the dealer wants you to buy one. The finance managers are paid by commission, not unlike the salesperson. They make their money off of finance charges (extra interest), and mostly warranties and clear coat protection crap like that.
He CAN compete with other places if he wants.
I hate buying aftermarket warranties. It's like gambling, and as well all know the house wins, and that's how they stay in business. It may cover you once or twice on small stuff, sure. But imagine buying a warranty on every car for the rest of your life. What is the cost going to add up to, how much will the companies end up having to cover?
Most warranties only cover certain items, and only "complete failure" of compenents. They also often don't include rental cars, diagnostic fees, etc etc.
In my opinion, the only time I would buy an extended warranty is if I was really concerned about a high mileages automatic transmission or something.
But the choice is yours. The one warranty I did buy, I had one balljoint replaced, and one radio replaced. Sure would have costed me a lot less to do it myself.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm going to pass now that I've thought about it more.
I was looking through my paperwork and I completely forgot about Ford's 5 year 60K powertrain warranty that came stock on my truck... so even if I bought the cheapest warranty at $700 it would only give me 2 years extra. My worry is about a transmission problem... but $700 upfront + $100 deductible + significant chance of no problems in that 2 year period = not worth it.
One of the things that bothered me about the ford warranties also is the fine print, and I thank Sean for pointing this out to me, apparently you have to pay $100 when you bring in your vehicle with a problem (this isn't the deductible), if they say there is a problem covered under your warranty they refund you the $100, if the problem isn't covered under your warranty you're out $100.

I bought the premium extended warranty(from the dealership) for my truck for about $850. Best money I ever spent. I had over $5200 in work done on the transmission over 4 times, all covered by warranty. I had several other things covered too, something with the AC and the stock HU about 5x and then i said screw it and bought an aftermarket HU. Definitely get the best one from Ford you can, well worth it.

When I'm looking at electronics, if the sales person harps on recommending the extended warranty on that specific product, I'll look at another brand or just leave the store.
