A guy I work with has an Xterra, and he really likes it. He hasn't had to have any work done on it yet, either.

I think I'll have to go out and just test drive some Xterras and Cherokees in order to really compare.

I understand the more expensive insurance thing and whatnot but that's not a huge deal to me. If I haul around a lot of friends they normally help pay for gas which is always nice. When I had my Honda all of my friends gave me so much gas money that I never had to pay for gas.

I honestly just miss having a backseat.

Yea I agree with burning man... The Cherokee would be sick but your going to be lugging everyone around and be getting hit up for rides all the time! I had a grand cherokee and it was awesome just didnt like luggin people around

tough decision, but if I HAD to have an SUV, it would be a Cherokee.

Also, maybe check out a SportTrack as those have 4 doors and a full back seat. Easily fits 4 pax... Ive seen some deals on used ones around here.

ive actually heard good things about the xterras. only downside i've really heard is bad gas milage.

capable off road, and they have a frame. compared to the cherokee being uni body, which is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

I'd say anytime you bought a car and someone is offering you a good amount more to sell it you should. It all depends on what you want. If you really want something new this is the time to do it !

one of my freinds has a xterra and you cant just replace the u joint you have to replace the hole drive shaft thats 800 bucks the xterra when you turn all the way with the you get a grinding noise from the frount after about 80000 miles it a stupid bump stop that keeps you from over turning the wheel its just a plastic cap that goes over the metal bump stop that where out and mud and dirt gets stuck in the frame and it sucks to get it out

Keep it or get a bigger Truck, F150/250?

Then you can carry more people.
But if your like me, i got a truck so that i wouldn't have to be the one driving when going out with friends.

Have you considered any Toyota SUV's? Landcruiser, 4runner. I have heard a lot of great things about those. I don't know if you could find one for 8K though.

I know this is a Ranger website but I need honest opinions about this.

As much as I'd like to say I do, I hardly use the bed for anything. I throw stuff back there a lot but normally nothing that wouldn't fit in a trunk/etc.

Also, being in high school I love driving around with my friends, and I can't really take anyone anywhere due to the small cab of the Ranger.

This is what I'm considering of buying:

Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

Also there are some other ones I'm looking at:
Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

and

Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com
Has anyone had an experience with the Xterras? I know they haven't gotten great reviews but neither has the Ranger yet the Ranger is a great vehicle. It seems to meet my needs as far as functionality wise without breaking the budget...Or are there any better options?

HELP!
they can be super sweet with alot of money in them ive seen them get stuck in pretty much everytihng a buddy of mine has one and its stuck every other day but if your not planning on offroading id go for it cuz i got stuck with 3 ppl in my truck for 8 hrs and it was a tight sqeeze to sleep over night in it. but there good road vehicles far as i know.

I've been keeping a look out for a Sport Trac, but I've had no luck finding a fairly cheap one in decent shape that is 4WD.

The other thing appealing about the Xterra is the roof rack, etc.. I am an avid rower and mountain/road biker so it would really be a nice way to haul things around, though I know I could just put Thule bars on a Cherokee as well..

I totally forgot about some of those vehicles. I originally looked at some 4 runners before getting my Ranger. good idea.

Alright I started to look at some Toyota/Suzuki SUVs:

Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

I personally don't know anything about this SUV, but it has really low mileage and doesn't look toooooo bad.

1998 4Runner

The 'Yota's aren't bad. Did you consider just a standard issue regular Jeep? Wrangler, CJ, YJ, etc. They're cool as hell, can be had for not a ton of money, you can mod the crap out of them, the old inline 6's are a stout piece, standard shift, backseat, roll bars and coolness with top down that no amount of money can make any SUV have.

i vote cherokee. you could always look for a explorer as well. either way, you're only gonna be able to carry at most 5 or 6 people. like someone posted, that can be very distracting to the driver. i'm 29 and i've got 8+ years of experience on you and a full bus of people can be distracting as well. that's not even including all the people who get on and off.
