Grover air horns

1 Attachment(s)
If you're ever thinkin about the big grover air horns... (30" long 7.5" flare)

Here's my clip I took when I had 2 of them on my truck. 5gal tank, 120psi goin to the horns in the clip (full tank of air.. I lost about 5-10 psi on the blow of the horn)

I've since gone back to the two trumpet 1601 series grover and 1 of the 30" horns... It sounds better, and it's louder. I don't think I had enough pressure through the lines to push both of the big horns at the same time... Had I had say a 10gal tank capable of 250psi or so, it would have worked just fine! I still like the twin trumpet and the long grover though... Enjoy! Hoping to give some people an incite on what it'll sound like with the horns I have on my truck for future projects!

not sure what size airline ur running but ill put my 2 cents in.

dont need more pressure for them horns...... the name of the game is "volume" run the bigest air line to them you can THEN neck down to the proper size fitting.

my dad had a set of nathen air chimes P3 train horns on his semi truck for a few yrs. 3 trumpets. the inlet air fitting was a 5/8" fitting. on the truck he ran 1/4" line cause it was quick and simple. they were still loud but not as potent as they could be. after some time he took them off when he got a new truck and never out them back on. we tryed them with our shop compressure @ 125psi. only thing we did different......hooked them to a 5/8" air hose. and DAMN! they was LOUD.

lol so my point is its volume.

BTW: nice horns.

Right... I want to tap out the holes on the horns and my 2way valve to at least 1/2 in... and run 1/2 through the whole system... but I was also told that pushing that much air into the horn (going from 1/8 thread to 1/2 thread) may not make the horn sound right and push too much air and the only sound I'll get is forced air through it, no horn noise... Do you know anything about that? That's what's limiting me from tapping out the holes on the horns to bigger... I don't want to ruin the horn by making a bigger hole to push more air into it and have it not even work... ya know?

Old Black Cat 04-07-2008 12:43 PM

i would not tap out the horns. leave them well enough alone. you want to leave that restriction so they keep the same note. but do run 1/2" up to them. then use fittings and neck down to the 1/8" opening on the horn. that way the volume is there for the horns to take.

TrePaul86 04-07-2008 12:46 PM

That may hold true, but it's only going to let as much in at 1/8in as it can... Therefore running 1/2in through the whole system is worthless if my horns can't accept the pressure of 1/2... Ya know? Works similar to a funnel... You can dump as much into a funnel as you want but it's only going to let out through the bottom the dia of the hole at the bottom... Make that hole bigger and it lets more out... See what I'm sayin?

yept.

ok well then thats as loud as they will get for there inlet size id say. maybe see if you can get ahold of some trumpets with a larger inlet size.

im no expert but figgured id shoot the breeze bout it with ya.

TrePaul86 04-07-2008 12:52 PM

Yah I appreciate it man... I haven't come across any horns with a bigger inlet though! I don't know where to find em and if I found em I'm sure they're not gonna be $45/each like the 30" ones I got... FREIGHTLINER SURPLUS YARD FTW! lol

Old Black Cat 04-07-2008 12:56 PM

these are the horns im shootin for when i have a few extra bux. the P3 and P5 are built on the same manifold so i can ad 2 trumpets later to the P3.

Looks to me though, those inlets are still only 1/8in...

go there ive got pics of the horns in the bed

ive got a p3 on my truck..inlet is 1/2" i have 1/2" line going through on a 1/2" valve

i would run 1/4" on the grovers i had 4 of em on the truck at one time..no need to let 1/2 hose to go through a 1/4" inlet only 1/4" of air is going through the horn at a time..its a waste

i wouldnt run more then 100-120 on them..anything else its just a big blow gun..

if you put more psi to the horn it just blows it out the end with no noise..

alot of nathan stuff is being sold on ebay called "over the road"

its nathan product but the inlets are like 1/4" which SUCK..

TrePaul86 04-07-2008 02:14 PM

Hmm... Good to know! Thanks Evan!

I have the same setup as Trevor's. But i'm not going to run the 3' horn...i'm going to run a 24'' horn as secondary to the 1601 grover. Except....Mine is not quite finished yet due to my compressor taking a crap! Trevor, mine'll be fully complete as soon as that DelCity order comes in!!

TRE, hence my reasoning for the 1/4 line into the 3' horn, rather than the rest of my 3/8...

Awesome! You look exactly like one of my friends btw lol

TrePaul86 04-10-2008 12:40 AM

I usually get that, daily lol... jp

I love the new sound!

jaysinpa 04-10-2008 04:40 AM

The new sound is much better. Did you go with heavier supply lines? Or did you just change the horns?

Fx4wannabe01 04-10-2008 04:59 AM

^^he currently runs the 1601 twins along with on 3 footer.....pics in the first post.

My setup is the same.......in two days. lol.
