Had a run of bad luck. Broken Drive shaft
So the other night I went to Boulder to help a buddy out who broke a UJoint on his rear shaft in his 77 Highboy, couldnt fix it because when it fell and drug it broke the housing. The bad thing is it was about 2am when I we finally got the rear shaft out so he could get home in 4high. When I was about to leave my battery was dead so I figured I would push start it drop the clutch and be back in business. Bad idea! Dropped the clutch and sheered the teeth off the slipjoint and my rear shaft was toast. Finally made it home about 5:30am and hunted the following day for a new shaft. Got one installed new joints and I am back on the road.
My question is has this happened to anyone else or am I just that unlucky? What I learned is always have jumper cables in the truck esp. if your an hour from home trying to fix someone elses rig. |
Hmmm my drive shaft went last week.. same sort of issue.. cost me 685 bucks to repair. And i was on a vacation so luckily i was able to get it fixed while i was there and not be out a car the whole trip.
|
Thanks for adding that I was sleeping, and was willing to leave my state of slumber to go help!
I saw the pic of it, nasty stuff... I still wanna know all of how it happened... |

Seems like people have been having trouble with their drive shafts lately. |

BTW.... Ory good job on getting and posting pics. |
oh well i really didnt have that luxury.. i was on vacation and didnt have the time to try to figure that out.. i thought about it but they didnt recommend it being they called it a common issue and said they couldnt guarantee it wouldnt happen again.. so now i have a 1 year warranty.
|
meh... before i got my new battery i rode out with a more or less totally dead battery push started every day multiple times a day for a year...
|
What Ory experienced was a fluke. Trucks and cars alike have been drop started for years with no problems. I say its due to operator error.
|
hahah or wear and tear??

60,xxx ? It was a faulty part or operator error. That part should live at least 200,000 k. |

I just replaced the front drive shaft u-joint today. It took three hours to get the drive shaft out. Anyway what kind of joint is on front driveshaft near the transfer case end?
|
hmm i should probably get a new front drive line soon...
hahah luckily only my rear has gone bad so far at 90k.. and i know its from clutch dropping and racing.. its my own fault im sure. |
only reason my front went was because i tore the CV boot some how and it packed full of grit and crap. and too much 4low 4,000rpm spinning the wheels:biggthump
|
hahah thats no good.. i remember on my last truck i blew my entire t-case but luckily it only cost me 50 bucks luckily.
|
yeah thats what i was thinking first because i was in 4hi and all i could hear was a grinding noise and my front end didn't even try to spin. i went oh s*** here we go
|
Haha. I had the same issue. It would click and grind and shuttered it was bad business.. I think it happened when i hit a dip then mound at like 25 mph off roading and well i saw only the sky out my wind shield i blew the gears in my front end and my t-case.
|
It for sure was not operator error I think it was a fluke I dropped the clutch to start it and SNAP it was not a good evening.
BTW thanks Chuck for being willing to leave your state of slumber lol |
Yeah thats no fun and all you did was drop the clutch..
