I don't doubt there may have been a few built. But if you try to use the Ford parts computer to look up parts, there's no such thing listed. Basically they don't show a 4 cylinder trans or parts in 4x4. Try for instance to look up a 2.3L 4x4 trans mount for 1996. I have run into that on a few vehicles over the years.

It may also not be listed anymore as its older than 10 years now, and Ford tends to drop parts out of their inventory after 10 years, I know I have a hard time buying stuff now for my 94 Ranger from the dealer, I used to have to get the stuff newer rangers. Luckily, since 80% of the Ranger is still the same, parts were relatively easy to buy, we just had to search for the newer years.

I have seen a handful of them, and every once in a while one will show up on eBay.

I also have a 1996 Ranger brochure that confirms that you could get a 2.3L 4WD (but only with a manual trans and regular cab).
