Sounds to me like the sending unit in the tank is going bad. Something like that is easy check for the average mechanic, and usually easy to fix, if ya dont have to drop the tank. Car dealers are the most expensive places to get your car fixed, but they specialize in the brand and know it well. Ask around, some of the best, non-dealer, mechanics work in small shops, and this will save you money.

what do you mean by the fuel gage reads less than what really is in it? is it on "E" but theres still fuel in the tank? that's normal. after the "check gage" light comes on, theres still around 3-5 gallons still in the tank.

Are you driving on any steep hills? When I go up and down long hills I noticed that it affects the gauge. When I'm going down hill the gauge will read less, up hill the gauge will read more. If I'm parked it will read up to a 1/4 tank off, I only trust the gauge when I'm on flat ground. It drove me nuts at first, but now I'm used to it.
