cold air intake, dual exhaust, and a throttle body spacer may help a bit. not a whole lot. it just helps your engine breathe better and get a little more power to the wheels. that's about all you can do.

The only way your getting more power with a ranger is a tuner. It can be all stock.

Start by putting everthing to factory specs. Plug gaps, sparkplug wire resistance, temperature sensors, thermostat, etc. Clean everything you don't replace. Make sure there are no vacuum leaks. Change oil & use either synthetic oil or an additive to lower viscosity in dino oil. Check to make sure that no brake surfaces are dragging. In other words, take care of any problems in advance.

Now learn about hypermiling. Adopt those techniques that seem applicable to your circumstances. Keep your expectations reasonable. These trucks were not designed for gas milage, rather for hauling & towing. Good luck & let us know how you do.

^aslong as you dont do any of this youll be fine.

the biggest factor is driving style no matter what if your not driving for max economy its pointless

best advice by far

here are some mods that actually will help mpg:
electric fan: this will take a lot of the strain off the engine, mostly good for city driving, dont expect a lot on the hwy since the fan wont be working nearly as much.
slightly taller, yet skinny, tires that have a LRR (low rolling resistance)
tonneu cover is easiest for your bed.
rims that dont have huge gaps in their design.

but your best overall mileage is going to come from driving habits.

Tire pressure is a big factor believe it or not. Buy a digital pressure gauge.

I check my tire pressure weekly. Even one tires being 2 PSI off will effect it greatly.

yea, I forgot about tire pressure.
I run mine at 40psi for long trips (due to heat generation) if I know Im going to be staying near home for a few weeks, I'll add a couple lbs, and run them about 42psi.
I also check them once a week.

ha! im lucky to check mine once a MONTH. i've been Nitronized by belle tire, but i've never had them lose pressure or anything out of the ordinary.
and as for the tonneau cover thing, Mythbusters proved that the little tailgate net thing actually gets better MPGS.
A 4.0 wasn't built for gas mileage. our engines were built to tow, haul and make 3.0 owners want a 4.0

Icon8 bad gas mileage 98 ranger 4.0 HELP A #) REAR

When I first bought my 1998 ranger xlt 4x4 it actually got good mileage. I now have 109K on it and now the mileage went from 16 to 18 mpg to 9 or 10 mpg a couple months ago. I was told at the dealer that they have a software update that was a recall item at one time but I'm past the mileage and time period. Has anyone tried this update yet and if so please let me know what you found out. the update is $85.00 and I don't want to waste it, I retired from the Army (30 yrs) and they don't pay much on retirement. Anyone with any answers can call me if you like at 586-498-9992. Thanx Brothers and sisters. Rucrzy or at my e-mail ---rucrzy1956@yahoo.comPS: tried to call ford and got nowhere, go figure!!!

I got 16-20MPG with my '05 5 speed 4x4 Ranger when it was stock.

Now It has a 2" lift and 33" tires. I get 14-16MPG.

Yours should be in the same ballpark. There really isn't anything besides driving habit that can get you better MPG. That, and nothing but highway driving.
