HELP MY PARENTS WANT TO CASH FOR CLUNKERS MY TRUCK
#52
Translation... It's a piece of ****.... ditch it.

I dunno Cam.... It kinda sounds to me like your truck wasn't a priority until the probe died which isn't necessarily a bad thing but kinda makes you SOL... I think I'd try to cut a deal with your dad and get the title swapped ASAP if the trucks really that important...
I can definately related on loving a vehicle that everyone hates so I hope it works out for you!
BTW you name on the title shouldn't affect insurance 'cause you're still INSURED on the vehicle, your name on the title or not...

Having been in your situation, Downey, I know it sucks. Your truck sucks too, but if you are that attached to it, then you might as well keep it.
How bad is your moms van? If it is a clunker itself, why not use it for the bill thingy majigger? If it's not, then why not help her out? It's not like they are being selfish and just taking it away from you, they are asking for your decision. Besides, you have that new car, so what's the worry?
If my mom needed a new car, and my parents asked me to trade in my Ranger, I would. My mom is a lot more important to me then any old beater truck.

my moms van is a clunker and they were ready to trade it sunday for a fwd 4 cyl escape. her tranny is under warranty for another year and it runs great it just needs cosmetic work and her van qualifys but they want to sell it private after useing my truck as the clunker and put the money she gets from her van selling it private to put on her loan for the new car

^^His parents are being smart about the CARS plan. Others, if it would qualify, they'd CARS the van and get a new car....why do that when their kid has a truck that isn't worth much, take advantage of the $4500 that'll be coming from it, then sell the van privately to make more money. Thats the right way to do this plan.....gets the most smartest moneywise for the consumer. Makes WAY more sense.
Cam...talk to the parents. Tell them your feelings for the truck. Formulate a plan. Has your truck been insured for the past 12 months and you guys can come up with the insurance cards that cover the past 12 months? Or...how about getting the Probe in there for CARS. Or has that not been insured for 12months?

If I understand the bill correctly, they are giving you money for trading in your old crappy car for a new one. Why does she not use the money she gets from the gov to help pay on the loan for the new car? Or is that not how it works?
#61
im all for sentimental value ... but 256k miles in the rust belt?!?! .... seriously see if your dad will allow you to grab a newer ranger and swap the good **** onto it ... then clunker up the 94
#62
Cam....how much on Normal Trade-In would the parents get from the van? Completely bypass the CARS program...
#63
I would just do it, Downey. There is NOTHING more important than family. You can always get another Ranger. Hell, maybe down the road you all will realize that Chevy is better anyway

they are trading my truck and keeping her van then selling her van prive once she sells her van then they are taking that money and putting it on her loan 2 so my dad wants us to cut down from 5 cars and he is just being a dick because he thinks we have to many cars

There's certain qualifications to get either $2500, 3500, or 4500 rebate from the Gov. Than ontop of that, you can get the dealer and manufacturer incentives ontop of the Gov incentive. You can make a $17,000 focus end up costing about $9000. I would've been all over it if we still had our minivan and got a focus.

Looks like you gonna be s.o.l. But talk to them and weigh your options. You might be able to get enough for the probe to put a down on something else. I had to give up my 2000 ranger wich I am still attached to but now I have my '02 4x4 so I know the feeling, sometimes you just have to let go to make room for better. I say tell your parents how you feel, go with the flow and who know maybe youll have a newer and better ranger in the near future, plus this is for your mom man...dont mess with the woman that gave you life, lol (it's an Irish thing, my mom would punch me in my head if I ever went against her). And for the record I am totaly against this cash for clunkers thing, but thats niether here nor there, good luck man.

What would he get if he traded the van in for the CARS program? Probably $3500, whereas if your truck was traded in, he'd be getting $4500. Got a $1000 cash to pay the difference to keep the truck?

no he would get 4500 for the van because they are getting this
this exact car

i hate the idea too he just wants to not have 5 cars at the house is what is comes down too
also my mom on sunday was like i dont want my van crushed i hate to see a perfectly good vehicle get destroyed or any of these cars that they are trading in she hates the program too

Cam...it's a money thing. They're looking at it like $4500 for the truck that isn't even worth $1500. Getting $3000 or so for the van in private sell. There's $7500 and add ontop of that dealer and manufacturer incentives = cheap new vehicle. It makes sense.
Ask yourself, is the juice worth the squeeze when it comes to the Ranger? Needs a bed, needs cab mounts, rust everywhere, veryvery high miles on the engine and transmission...it's gonna be a money pit pretty soon. Is keeping it worth the cost of constantly replacing parts on it? Like I said earlier, If I were in your shoes, I'd give the truck up and start over on a better condition truck to begin with. Shoot....just down the street from me there's a 94 4.0 xcab that looks just like yours...same color and everything. It's in great great shape and it's asking price is only $2500 with 130k on the clock.
