Icon3 K&N ''dropin'' vs air intake kit

so ive seen the forums on the cold air intake kits , and correct if im wrong but people are saying that the cold intake, dont really work as thay draw hot air in to the motor, and that you have cold intake on your truck stock, and getting the intake you will see little or no gains ......

but.......

what about the drop in filter ? does it really let the truck breathe better,
does any body have this in there truck and any gains from it ,
is it worth the money, or is it as worst as the intake and you see little or no gains,?
or will getting the intake kit give you more gains, over the drop in if it even does to begin with

......happy thanksgiving

Yup. They are a bit pricey but that would be my choice if I was hopping up my truck.Just so you know though it won't do much on its own though.

Not really. The only difference will be that you can wash the filter. Just pull the silencer out for some sound.

If you live in a dirty area (gravel driveway, dirt roads, lots of construction nearby) don't get a drop-in or cone type filter. A drop-in does breathe easier than regular filter, and you can clean and reuse it saving some coin over the trucks life. Remove the air silencer, add a drop-in, and use some old snorkle flex tubing to funnel the silencer's air box opening thru the GOR (grille opening reinforcement) to the headlight for true cold air (cheaply) without any engine heat bleeding into the intake.

adding an intake is a lot like putting an exhaust on your truck, because all its going to change is the sound. IF you have an exhaust it should help out and give you maybe 2-5hp.

I read about a year or so ago about a guy that had access to a dyno. He LOST 1 HP with the drop in. So I went out and got the K&N cold air kit. IMO a waist of money. My "seat of the pants" dyno, tells me I picked up 3-4 HP MAYBE. Spend your money on the UD pulleys and an E-fan. From what I've been reading on here, you will do you much better. Just don't expect to much from the little 3.0 if if it's just a mildly moded DD.

My K&N works great...the OHV doesn't have much but it made quite a bit more throttle response..plus it does sound great :)

I'd have to say exhaust helped my 4.0 quite a bit. Id say more along the lines of about 10 hp. It pulls really hard now about 3000 RPM. The stock crap uses a tiny restrictive pipe and muffler. My Magnaflow catback has nice mandrel bent piping with a straight flow muffler. Best mod I ever did to my truck.

The K&N flows better, but they also do not filter anywhere near as well as most paper filters and there have been plenty of tests to document it.
Purolator makes some of the best paper filters from studies I've seen, best combination of flow and filter. The factory isn't going to make the air filter so small that it is restricting power in the first place, so think about that for a minute as well. If you had a blower installed or other high HP mods, sure you're going to need more air. Most aftermarket intakes will allow more airflow, but generally on an mostly stock truck it's just going to be a noise maker. In some cases a poor performing noise maker. lol

I have an AEM intake on my F150 (dry filter, washable) only because I got it for $80, and I thought it sounded/looked good. My intake air temps are higher than stock and I wouldn't be surprised if I lost a tiny bit of power in most of the RPM range. If I bought a new intake it would be a volant with a dry filter, although I wouldn't expect much gain from it.

If you just want a little more noise, you can remove the silencer in the intake box.

The right exhaust will help quite a bit, I agree. I have heard of back to back dyno pulls on F150s where there was 13hp+ gain from swapping the catback exhaust.
I had a magnaflow catback on the Jetta (VR6) and now on the Subaru (2.5L turbo) and I felt more power in both cases at higher RPMs.
