negatives to driving in sand....
Im wondering if some of the people wanting to take their vehicals into sandy situations, such as a desert, tralise the dangers i geuss u could call them of submitting your vehical to such a harsh condition..... dont forget, in Iraq, the military breaks down every helicopter engine after something like 100hrs of use due to sand. same goes with everything mechanized. Sand is detrimental to a vehical regardless of what it is. I realise you wont be there long, but it doesnt take much to get sand into places it shouldnt be.... and then it rubs and vibrates and makes your paint go bye bye in areas u dont see. and/or cant get too, causing premature rust. not to mention the dust cant be very good for anything, such as your engine, and paint job. air filters dont stop everything.....
I dunno, maybe im just being over zealous? but it seems to me there is alot of interest to take the second largest purchase a person makes in life and drive it thru sand.... i know its not my vehcail, and i would NEVER submit my vehical that i cared about to such a situation, but does everyone get the fact that driving in sand, is probably the worst thing you could do to a vehical besides driving it thru ocean surf?

eh i have never had a problem with it and to be honest i can't avoid it. no matter where i go off-roading i run into sand. it doesn't help me taking it to SAND mountain either. lol. but honestly it harder for sand to destroy your vehicle then you are letting on. the helicopters in iraq are subject to extreme sand conditions. MAJOR sand storms are the main problem. not so much a problem here anywhere. to have your paint taken off by sand it would have to be put through a lot of sand that is blasting from tires of a car right in front of you. not smart to off road in a single line right behind eachother. sand areas are usually wide open spaces. use all of it. the only thing i would avoid is your airfilter. if it is still in the stock box you should be alright but if you have an open cold air intake then put your money towards an outerwears cover. it is at any dirtbike shop and come in many sizes so it will fit. it will stop everything including water. just check your seals and if you run in sand alot then change your oil a little more frequently. oh and don't follow anyone in sand.

the problem is if youre taking it in sand along the seashore is that salt is in that from the water BUT if you are doing that id give it a good chassis bath regularly and you should have no lasting effects. I get chassis baths on my trucks whenever i wash them cause so much salt is used on the roads here sand wont be so big of a deal

I had a problem w/ my airbox (on the mx bike) and on my truck (not this one) I had a problem with the door jams, they would clog up w/ sand and the door wouldn't open/close right. Then I had a major problem when the wind slammed my door full open and now it won't close right.

^ummm yes and no, the sand is still going to get into and on everything at both places........idk what beaches you drive on but there is hard packed sand near the water, which is a whole nother beast if its salt water, than theres the soft stuff farther from the water which is pretty much the same sand as in the desert.......

we took our 1985 z28 onto daytona beach a few times, they have driving lanes for everyone to drive on. dad, decided to be adventurous and drive OFF the hard packed sand, mind u, the car was full of luggage and stuff, and we sank instantly. that sucked. 1hr later we were unstuck, and that was 10yrs, 40K miles ago, and I can STILL find sand in that car!

"dont forget, in Iraq, the military breaks down every helicopter engine after something like 100hrs of use due to sand."
I can guarantee you that statement is far from correct.
The engines get borescope inspections, they get gas-path cleaner and water washed.
They get power checks every so often.
They most certainly don't get removed and taken apart unless it's necessary.
