98 super cab 4x4 4.0 auto, bone stock. 290,000 miles. Thinking of replacing the motor it still runs. Planning on sticking with the 4.0. Asking for recommendations on where to get a motor from, and who to stay away from.
Last time I spoke with Ford a rebuilt long block was $2400, and $1700 to do the swap. Came with a 3 year unlimited mileage warranty. I put about 25,000 miles a year on it. I'm in St. Louis, Mo. Budgeting between 5 and 6 grand.

 

If it is still running strong and not burning oil, I don't really see a reason to replace it.

 

If it aint broke don't fix it.

 

Why are you replacing the motor ?

Smoking, running rough all the time, not enough power ?

Replacing a 4.0 with a 4.0 isn’t going to gain power or more mpg, just another 4.0L.

Have you considered a 5.0L out of an Explorer ?

If none of the above applies and you are after a bone stock 4.0L there are better places to buy a 4.0L than from Ford.

Start looking around your area for remanufactured engines, then maybe a 4.0L with some power options added to it.
Putting it in, you will be paying Ford a premium price for something a local shop can do a little less expensive.

Just things to think on.

 

I vote 5.0L, you might even get better mileage since the motor isn't working as hard.

 

Don't listen to them, come to nh to buy my 4.0! Only 39k on it.

Seriously though, I agree on swapping a 5.0 from an explorer. You can have it rebuilt and installed for under 6 grand.

Also I was just thinking, if your budget is 5-6k why not buy a different truck?

 

I replaced a 2.9 with a 5.0 and got better mileage.

No new truck, you won't get the V8 out of the deal.
