How can I improve my gas milage??
 

What are some ways that i can get a better gas milage with my 2002 ranger 4x4, 4.0L, auto. I get like 14 city and about 16 highway.I have a K&N filter in it but it doesnt seem like it got any better. I cant get any better than that even if i baby it. I just tuned it up and didnt make a difference.thanks

There isn't much you can do, my truck gets about the same. Maybe change the plugs/wires and exhaust. May get you like 1mpg if lucky.

a bamachip if you have a few hundred dollars laying around will get you 2-3 mpg maybe

drive a car
14 CITY / 16 HWY is pretty normal and about the best you can expect
driving like a granny really does help, but only 1-2 MPH worth

When I put my bed cover on I got a little better gas mileage, like 1MPG. Everybody with bama tuners clain better mileage. Everyone with E-fans claim better mileage. AC mod got me just a little better mileage in the winter. I don't really ever go in the city but I average like 16-17 MPG 18 when I keep my foot out of it. and I am turning 35's.

14 to 16 is definately improvable. I get 18-20 and I haven't done anythign drastic. I found the biggest differece is how heavy your foot is. If you don't mash the thing every time you get rolling from a stop and you keep it under 70 on the highway, it makes a big difference. Doing the AC mod so the compressor isn't always running when you don't need it is a helpful mod as well.

efan, exhaust, chip, intake, underdrive pulley...

All of which costs 10x more than you'll ever save in the fuel milage gains.

My four banger gets 20 mpg average. I see 4.0l as a big motor meant to haul stuff, not to get good mpg. Just my $.02

I got the 4.0 and am getting 16/17city- 20hwy and all I have is the K&N stock replacement. I drive in the city mostly and it seems like I take off moderately to get to the overdrive gear I get the best milage, then I set the cruise after the gear shift for low rpm driving. Put the tailgate down, make sure tires are at proper inflation. The biggest way to save is to see ahead for when the lights will change or traffic will slow and constant pressure on the pedal makes a huge difference. Thats the best way to save. Ive also heard getting fuel at the colder parts of the day makes the fuel more dense=less money. And dont let your car idle a whole lot when warming plus put in fuel syst. cleaner. (Just Heard)

Don't mash the gas, make sure air filter is clean, keep your vehicle clean(it does improve dynamics), tires are properly inflated, plugs and wires are good, injectors clean. Driving fast + windows down = not good. Roll them up when driving highway speeds. Just a few things I do with my 4banger and Im gettin about 19 streets/23 freeways. Many will say well its a 4banger but... my work truck is more than double the size engine (V8) and its a 4x4 and it gets about 17/20 when I do my "sunday driving." And like they said, Im pretty sure its proven that driving 65 instead of 75MPH saves you liek 15-25% fuel. Something like that. Good luck

Putting the tailgate down will at best do nothing while leaving it easy to damage, and more likely actually cause a decrease in milage. The truck is aerodynamicly more efficient as designed with the tailgate UP. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but aerodynamics are often not what they seem. Air doens't hit hit the tailgate like a wall.

The gas is stored by the thousands of gallons in tanks burried underground below the frost line. The temperature down there does not fluctuate with the outside temperature. That density thing is an urban legend (much like the tailgete thing).

Anticipating lights and driving a little "nicer" is all good advice.

When I purchased my '00 in Jan '05 I converted ALL the lubricants to synthetic which gave me a 1 mpg increase....
Installed a BBK throttlebody, K&N FIPK, BAMA Tuner, Gibson catback exhaust and Taylor wires with Motorcraft platinum sparkplugs....
All of these upgrades along with installing 265x75 tires (yes I figure in for the odometer differences) have given me a best of 18.5 mpg; although most of the time hwy/city averages about 16/17.

I was a little unsure about the density thing, and that is true about the tailgate getting damaged- not a good risk. I think for the most part it doesnt matter except for long distance highway. One of my buddies said he did see a minimal improvement. I hope to speak of experience soon though cause im driving from AK to IN.

Hey 4x4, did the 265s fit on stock wo rub, thats like a 31 right? I get confused about the numbers like that, I wish the makers would just put 31 or 33. (03 Edge- 245x75)i think!

YES.... a 265x75R16 is approximately a 31.6" tall tire.
(265 x .75 / 25.4 x 2 + 16" = 31.649")
The 265s are mounted on factory aluminum 16" rims and I have not received any rubbing so far....

When I put my flows on my truck I got 1 - 2 mpg better. Also when I had my toneau cover on I got better milage by 1-2 mpg. I wish I still had a toueau cover but I need my tool box, I also like the looks of the soft covers.

Thanks for the input cause I hate the factory tires and want new ones for grip. I feel ashamed when I try to pull someone out of a snow bank or somethin, its embarasing.lol
