i've been a chevy man - toyota man my whole life but now i need a new truck and im bout tired of pos chevy and toyotas are rediqulous expensive whew i live in florida and need to drive through deep water to hunt game im looking at rangers as my top choice for my new truck (would never buy dodge and nissans are high torqe i have no intrest of reving 5500 rpms before i get any power) i need 2 kno what years ranger with which motor is suggested (please keep optimum mpg/performance in mind) and about how deep rangers can go in water before they drown and of any upgrades i would want for deep water (no huge lifts or tires) (my silverado on 33's went a couple inches over the hood as long as i didnt stop or plow the hole just fine) my new truck will be extended cab 5 speed 4x4

 

95 or older, 4.0L… short bed std cab.

Also, I do not think that there is a Ranger other than a 4 cyl that will give you more than an honest 18 mpg.
Rangers are not good on gas.
I did drive a 95, 2WD, 2.3L, 4 cyl, 5-sp… yes I got 24 at times but not always, around town less.

My 3.0L, 5-sp, 4WD is lucky to get 16, even on the Hy-way.

And there isn't one ranger in particular that will drive through water over the hood. If you want to do that I would look into a snorkel system and a lift with tires. Most rangers can fit 33's with a body lift.

 

I'm getting 25 or more MPG in my current 4 banger. My '97 4.0L consistently gave me 21.4 MPG. and yes I did do the math properly.

 

Can a rangers air box easly be moved inside the glove box? And when u say u get 20's and he gets 16 how do yall drive?

 

You can reroute the intake to the cab but doing this would not be the smartest thing to do for everyday driving as it will hinder your air flow greatly. I think if you plan on driving through water over your hood on a regular basis you would have bigger problems then just the intake. I would look at getting a bigger truck or a boat.

 

i get 19.5 mpg in my 2004 4.0L on 33s. Id keep saving and get a toyota lol

 

Any 4x4 Ranger will fit 32s with just a T-bar crank. Thats all I have and along with extended vent tubes, I have been through water halfway up the doors many times without problems. Higher than that and you will need a snorkel.

Stay away from the 3.0 IMO, it doesn't have power or mpg.

 

yea with a little truck i have a way better chance of avoiding water then a full size truck but it just gets deep in my 2 woods i have around here

As to the question asked, if you plan on driving in water over your hood, You will need to mod any truck to an extent.

All the years are decent in my opinion. Not the best on gas but ok. I have a 3.0 V6 and get around 22-24 at 65 mph on the highway.
